Shift Cable Problem

2000 Sierra Z71, auto trans.

 

Hello. The other day my shift cable popped off the lever on the side of the transmission. It appears either the little pin on the lever the cable end pops onto has become too small from corrosion and/or something is wrong with the cable end. I pushed it back on but it's not on there very good and will pop off again soon enough:

 

 

Perhaps this is a common fail point so I figured I'd post in here to see what I need to do. Thanks!

My truck did this a couple months back and i simply popped it back on and havent had another problem since. I even went to the dealership and asked to get a printout of the lever/cable to see if there was actually a pin there in the first place. None of the technicians knew one way or the other. IMO leave it be and if it should happen again look into then. Its been 4 months since mine did this and i havent had a single problem with it.

Lovely. I really can't leave it, though. Parking brake doesn't work and won't be for some time. My wife drives it sometimes and if it comes off again, it won't be pretty if she's stuck in reverse, lol. I've found the cable online but have no idea what the little lever is called so I haven't found it yet.......

Went to the dealer and it was 10 bucks for the lever and they even had it in stock. Looking at the old one, I can see why the cable was popping off. The pin on the lever was much smaller due to rust. The p/n is 15251895 in case anyone ever needs it.

Thanks for the heads up on the part number if mine ever does this again i will def go buy it seeing that it is only 10 bucks. I dont blame you at all for fixing it since your parking brake doesnt work. When mine did this it baffled me for a minute but then set the parking brake and figured it out bc mine got stuck in reverse too. Good job on getting it fixed.
