Splitting Cable For Digital Tv And Modem

I need to split the cable line at the wall in our bonus room. We just bought the house 2 months ago and didn't realize that there was no cable outlet in the office for our cable modem and router (there is not a cable outlet in the second bedroom either). In order to get a good signal through the whole house we had to put the modem in the bonus room. We do not have a TV up there yet but we already have the box ready to go when we get the bonus room finished and a TV up there. I was planning on just putting a splitter at the wall and then running one cable to the box and the other to the modem. Or I will split the line in the attic space and then cut a new opening in the wall for another connection point.

Will this degrade the signal to either one?

Is there a better way to split the line so I can have both in the bonus room and have no signal loss to both the cable box and modem?

I have Comcast.

You want your modem to come off the very first split in your line

He is right. Depending on the signal strength coming into your house, you may be able to get away with 2 splits away from the first drop in your house if the line coming into your bonus room is coming off of a -3.5db split instead of a -7db split. Check your splitter(s) and add up how many dbs you are losing coming into that room.

Wireless modem in my house is after 2 splits and there is no issues.. We do have a booster amp in the house tho which was recommended and installed for free by time warner.. Hell it should be for free, we pay enough to watch tv and surf the net

If you type in 192.168.100.1 into your browser it will give you the Rx level in Dbmv of your Modem and your Tx Level along with your MER's of the digital QAM. Repost with what you got and I can give you an idea if the Signal is good or not.

I handle Network Maintenance for TWC In Charlotte NC btw..

I dont see any of those abbreviations, lol

But heres what i see in status

RF Parameters

Downstream

Freq/Power: 711.000 MHz -4 dBmV

Signal to Noise Ratio: 38 dB

Modulation: QAM256

Upstream

Freq/Power: 38.000 MHz 56 dBmV

Channel Type: DOCSIS 1.x (TDMA)

Symbol Rate: 2560 kSym/sec

Modulation: QAM16

Then it says my LAN speed is 100 (full)

My sister works in one of the buffalo ny offices in customer service also..

Your Forward level is -4dbmv with a 38 MER..(Good) Transmit level is 56dbmv..(maxed out) don't split this anymore. The return won't report back to the CMTS is the Hub/Head-End.

Adelphia ran the Buffalo system in the old days, and Empire Sports with the Rigas family owned that too...

We got treated better by them also...Today it just being a number and generating numbers....:P

Thanx rob, i forgot about this.

So the transmit level is upload speed i take it? When you say dont split anymore , does that mean off of the line that coming to my room? Or for the whole house?

I miss the back in the days when adelphia ran it.. Mainly because it as a hell of alot cheaper. lol

Although from what i hear, TW treats employees good with pricing. Practically free except for addon stuff .

Got it split and have not noticed any drop in speed or picture quality. I still haven't re-routed the line but plan on doing that today.

So that brings me to my next question. Would you split the line in the wall and get one of the dual connector plates (http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202699692/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053) or use a single connector and split it after?

I thinking that the dual connector would look cleaner once it's installed but can't decide. Are they an pros or cons for either one?

    • Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!
    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
