Rubbing/clicking Feeling In Steering

Recommended Posts

Last winter, I started feeling/hearing a rough rubbing or creaking sound from behind the steering wheel when turning sometimes. Once the weather warmed up, it went away. Towards the end of the summer, I started to feel this again except now there is a slight click or clunk sound/feeling just off center in either direction. It doesn't feel like play and it does it both when driving and at a stop. It sounds like it's literally right behind the steering wheel. This is NOT the typical I-shaft issue. I experienced that not long after I bought the truck and replaced the shaft with the updated part. Feels/sounds/behaves nothing like that......

Any ideas? Could this be the clockspring? Thanks.

Just fyi here... but *any* noise from the column to the pump will *sound* like it's originating from the clockspring area. It radiates through the column, and the steering wheel becomes the "speaker".

Ok, any tips on isolating the source? Thanks

I'm not familiar with the GMT800 steering shaft setup, but I had a noise on mine that I *swore* was from the clockspring. After a *lot* of looking around, I found that it was coming from the boot/seal on the gear box. Thankfully, it was a warranty repair... since it would be a real pain to replace. The first place to check is where the shaft passes through a rubber boot of any type (firewall, etc). If you can lube those, I'd try that first. It may well be the clockspring, but it's probably one of the least likely (imho).
