Odometer Reading?

Here is the question i have, i want to have to buy a Denali gauge cluster for my 1500 Silverado, but how does this affect the current odometer reading on my truck? I'll either but a new cluster or if i'm able to locate a used one i'll probably go with that since it will cost less. Does anyone know if the ECU keeps track of the mileage put on the vehicle or is strictly done through the gauge cluster only? I do not want to get into any possible legal issues later down the road when the time comes to trade or sell the car on the street. If knows or has any more info on this matter pls reply.

I don't know exactly where the info is stored, but everyone I have seen post about them, say the odometer has to be reprogrammed to your current milage to get it to be in line with what is actually on your truck.

 

You can also buy a decal from the dealer that is used to record the milage of your old cluster at the time of the swap.  Probably a lot cheaper that way, but I'd rather have the odometer read the correct milage, but that's just me.

I think the milage is in the cluster.  If you find a used one, get one with close to the same miles, or a few less and you'll be OK.  Otherwise you'll have to have a speedo shop reprogram your new cluster.  They'll have to have both clusters to do this.  I think that is because of the huge liabillities of fraud if you have them program in the wrong milage.

In all the states that I've been in, it is only considered fraud if the odometer is wrong and you say it's right.

Look at the back of your registration and/or title;

There should be a few lines about odometer reading and you check the correct box.

For example;

_The odometer on this vehicle is incorrect due to replacement of mechanical parts.

 

Something like this anyway.

So long as you don't tell a perspective buyer that it is the correct mileage when you know it isn't, you should be okay.

I agree with the replys made.

The mileage IS stored in the PCM on a EE prom chip which can not be erased.If you change the speedo head like I did, the odometer reads whatever the replacement has on it.The sticker sold at the dealer makes it legal to change it as long as it is made know at time of sale that a replacement part was used.Make sure title reflects the same at sale.A re program will normally cost about $75 at a speedo repair shop,

Which is better for resale.

The dealer had my cluster mileage adjusted when when I changed, so I did not have to do anything.

I don't know about other states, but in PA, every year when you renew your registration, you have to record your milage and send it into the state.  Also any service work you have done at the GM dealership or for state inspection also records the current milage.  I think it would be a wise idea to find a used cluster that is within a few thousand miles of your actual milage, or have the reprogramming done.

 

Check Ebay for used clusters if that is the way you want to go.  It seems like just about everything crosses Ebay from time to time...
