okay so i have done abit of searching on here in regards to aftermarket muffler... have found abit of info here and there but hard seeing alot of it is all over the place or just alot of stuff in the wrong sections....

so basically i have a 2011 sierra ext cab 4.8l now im looking for a little more low end and have been told and researched exhaust can give you a gain...

not looking to go crazy with exhaust and more or less looking to go with a aftermarket muffler.... anyone have any ideas if theres any low end gains in doing just muffler?

just looking to swap stock and replaced with aftermarket

by the looks of it, its 3" in/out....

any info greatly appreciated

thanks

When I was doing my research for a muffler a lot of people that I have talked to and on here said that you won't get any performace out of it on a gas engine, you only get a sound. When I finally bought my corsa sport exhaust, I did see improvements though. The improvements are't a lot but I could tell the difference. One of my friends put a borla muffler on is 09 and he said the same thing but it didn't shut up when he was towing anything, it sounds good though. When I drove it he didn't have the same increase that I did though and I think it was bc I went with bigger pipes and he just changed the muffler. It cost him 290 with it being welded to the pipes. At the end of the day I would make your decision on which muffler you like the sound of the best and hopefully you will see the improvements that you want. But don't expect anything to high and whatever you get will be happy with bc your standards are lower than what you get and maybe that's why I feel like I got more out of it then he did.

Ps I don't know if they changed the pipe size but I have a 09 and stock pipes were 2.5" and when I got the cat back they are 3" pipes. It was a big difference when I saw two next to each other.

Hopefully I helped and good luck.

Low end power is mostly torque not horsepower. Backpressure increase torque.

So you will have more low end power with your stock exhaust.

thanks for the info... i took a tape measure not that it will be that accurate when measuring the pipe itself however i was almost positive it was 3 inch... i have seen many other sierras and have looked at for instance the tail pipe just behind back wheel and looks smaller then whats on my truck... which is why i would think its 3 inch, ill have to dig out caliper to verify that...

just a little extra in the low end would be nice

and also all depending on budget will determine my hp gains, but a nice sound is worth it aswell

i have read that flowmaster seems to kill some of the power, which is what i was looking at.. and read magnaflow have better gains just not the same sound aswell as lasts longer..

so i guess will be hit or miss for me... have seem many around here stock id imagine with the GM exhaust system on it because of the sound, wonder what the difference of the stock exhaust is to the GM step up exhaust

so then with that said in order to get more torque in low end id need to tune?

deff has good torque in 4 low lol however its built that way... pulled out some big swing set footing this weekend with it...

but in terms of taking off from a set of lights the real power does hit till about 2500-3000

i had a rental which had the 5.3 in it 6 spd which had alot more low end mind you thats expected with having the extra gears...

The six speed has a 4.02 first gear while the four speed has 3.06

So the six speed has a stout first gear.

Do you have 3.73 in the back? Are you talking about power when you lay on the gas or slow pulling power?

i had 3.73 when i had my colorado and it went like as at our of hell

however this one here does not have the 3.73 whcih i know will make a difference i just checked and it has 3.23

when i lay on gas from a stop its sluggish

when im at about 40km and lay on it , it goes... while moving WOT it goes however from stand still not so quick...

lots of pulling power as i challenged that this weekend

Get a tune and forget about the exhaust.

Look up "4 second delay" sounds like one of your problems.

also id imagine voids warranty...

You have canned tunes like superchip, edge or Diablo. These help some but not as good as a custom tune. Diablo is my favorite and they are a site sponsor. They are the best gas burner handheld I know of. They allow you to customize your tune to run better. However they never offered TCM support so I never bought one. I owned a Edge for a year and will never buy one again.

Custom tunes are the best and you can get any shop with a dyno to do it. Everyone on the site including myself recommends Blackbear because he is very friendly and knows what he is doing. He is also a site sponsor.

Any tune will void your warranty. You just have to remove the tune before going to the dealer. The dealer does not typically search for tunes on gas trucks. They tend to focus on diesels and sports cars.

If you get a custom tune you will need to buy the autocal to remove your tune. Or you will need to buy an extra ECM and TCM. I'm guessing you have a 4.8L with 4speed trans?

interesting info...

i do have the 4.8l, kind of oppted that because the 5.3 didnt seem much different and the one i drove seemed to up shift and down shift alot...

eventually move up to the 2500 but that will be a long time yet, and probably will be something better then as i just found an article on the new colorado and GM`s direction towards the GM version of eco boost

    • I don't wanna do major surgery/upgrades, behind-the-dash work, add amps, change radio etc. on my '26 std cab WT. On the WT, it has the base 7" IOR infotainment setup, and only two speakers (doors). Since I listen to classical, looked around for speakers that do well and dug thru reviews. Two-way speakers were found to be better than 3-way. So I've ordered a pair of  Infinity Reference REF-9632IX 2 way speakers.  [These may  or may not have been discontinued / succeeded by the 3-way ...9633 ones.]    These speakers are lauded for 3 ohm and 94db sensitivity spec so they'll work well for ordinary base car radios without amps and offer better performance (quality,  strength) than  default base paper-cone speakers. They'll be installed in a few days and I'll let y'all know what I think. Bill W San Jose
    • Thanks!   Changed out the rear shocks today to Bilstein 5100s.  So far feel much better. The stock Rancho were wore out.  Lots of heavy hauling (2 moves, home renovations, etc).  Next up is new BFG tires Monday.  Cant wait the current tires have little to no wet traction and are super loud (hum)
    • Ok, I got the all the codes. What do you all think would be a place to start?
    • How about I just point to the factory pans stand pipe little drain plug and claim its a pan with a real drain plug !. I just couldn't swallow the fact that a Dorman pan which at this point is probably the only pan out there that fits the gas version truck cost that much up here in Canada so I decided initially anyway to skip it and see what I thought of pulling the pan method and down the road if I felt inclined enough then I would either install a drain plug kit in the factory pan if there is enough room for it, or have a bung welded onto it, or put an aftermarket pan on. The thing is if the pan is not pulled then the magnets in the pan can't be inspected and cleaned or if wanting to change out the filter. However of course it certainly would make the job easier to be able to drop the oil first before having to handle the pan if dropping the pan that go around was the goal.    I knew a guy locally that was doing custom field spraying years ago with a pickup pulling a ground driven sprayer, I believe it was a GM pickup with an automatic trans. He had a drain plug in his pan and would drop the oil out of it once a week and top it back up through the dipstick tube to keep refreshing a portion of the oil often and that made the transmission last far longer than had he done nothing. Soft fields pulling 500 gallons of water at the start of each mixed up sprayer tank batch and in low range sucking along. I imagine he got some tips from other custom sprayer outfits doing the same thing at the time and learning from their blown up tranny mistakes. Transmissions then had no lock up converter so would cook the crap out of the fluid slipping that much and it would not have been synthetic fluid either.
