Are codes for last known problems stored?

My problem is random at best. Its the age old service airbag indicator however there is no rhyme or reason to it. The only predictable trigger as of late has been cold? I use to be able to clear it (if and or when it popped up) by a simple shut off and restart.. It wouldnt come back then. The past two times, that it has been cold (weather wise) if I shut the truck off and restart, it wont clear. HOWEVER if the truck has been running and things warm up, it will then clear if I shut it off and restart. YES this is how random it is. Another tidbit of information is that it wont clear in the middle of a drive or anything. Ive read about that happening where it would clear on its own. I usually have to initiate it by shutting the truck off.

SO due to the randomness of it, does the light have to be on in order to pull a code? I cant imagine trying to run somewhere and get someone to pull a code, whenever it MAY happen. If I go somewhere, and have to wait and shut the truck off, and it clears, then its pointless..

Thanks!

Codes should save for 10 ignition cycles with an H (history) suffix. Even with that said, I try to pull codes with the engine/ign still on after a SES/CE lite if possible--seems to be more reliable.
