Oil Monitoring system

I have a 2004 - 2500 silverado, and for sometime now, my oil life usage is stuck on 56%. I change my oil myself, reset the sensor to 100% by using the gas pedal, but when I turn off the truck and turn it back on, it goes back to 56%. Is there a sensor in the oil pan that has gone bad?? Everything I have read said there is no sensor, but a computer that figures out the oil life left. How can that be?

There's no sensor. The percentage of oil life is based on pre-programmed algorithms based on engine usage ( long trips, short trips, hot, cold, long idle time, etc.). I never paid any attention to mine. I just change the oil when it needs it, or based on mileage.

I'm guessing somethings wrong with the display/cluster or even the PCM not reporting it correctly. There's no sensor that I'm aware of. Its as described above, pre-programmed algorithms based on various conditions. It's not just based on mileage. It takes alot of variables into play.
