2000 Sierra Ext Cab, 5.3l, 2x4, 3 door. 1500

I recently bought my truck used and it came with a warranty of 6 months within 2 months of ownership the truck developed 2 problems.

1st: Almost everyday when I back out my driveway I will feel a wheel hop coming from the driver's side rear wheel. It seems to go away real soon but I also notice sometimes during city driving the back wheel will squeal when making a left turn.

2nd: Start up in the mornings are normal (perfect) but once I drive somewhere and shut off the truck for at least 5-10 minutes it becomes so hard to start. I have to let it crank for awhile and once it starts there is a good chance it will stall but eventually I can get it started. If I shut off the truck and start it back up right away most of the times it starts with no problems. It happens only when I let it sit 5-10 minutes.

Now the shop I have to take it to for the warranty said that it needs a tuneup and it's not covered by the warranty. So $120 later I gave it a proper tuneup. Replaced plugs with the recommended AC Delco plugs, replaced the wires, and the PCV Valve.

The tuneup did nothing, same exact problems. The shop where it's at said they can't do anything for me since they can't figure it out. They also said fuel pressure is normal.

So this shop will not fix the rear tire because they can't get it to do what i'm saying and refuses to fix the problem with the starting because they can't figure it out...I'm so furious right now because I believed in the warranty.

I,d wanna know what the fuel press. when it,s cranking and not starting. Hot soak issues can vary from ecm issuess to simple fuel filter problems. Try to find the basics when it wont start...fuel/spark. As far as the rear wheels i had a similar prob with my 2000. I bought it used and at the time had cheapo helper add a leaf springs. I removed those and wheel hop (spring wrap as it turned out) was better for a short time and quickly returned. A much closer insp showed a cracked main leaf. After a set a boneyard springs I had no more issues .

Several hard start hot issues on that engine have been traced to a leaking fuel pressure regulator. It leaks fuel from the rail to the vacuum line connected to the manifold. When it happens pull the small vacuum line off the intake manifold and turn on the key. Should see fuel drip out.

What he said. Also maybe find a more compitant shop.

I wish it was as easy as that. Since it's under the dealers warranty I have no choice but to bring it to that shop.

Now last night I went to get the truck back from the shop and they told me they cannot figure out the starting problem and they told me most likely the throttle body has to get cleaned (they showed me some bulletin from GM). But that is not covered under the warranty. I read these forums for hours last night and found the most common problem to be the Fuel Pressure Regulator, just as the post above stated. I told them about FPR and they told me that it was checked when they pressure tested it...

So as I pulled in the shop I saw the mechanic doing doughnuts trying to get the rear end to hop or squeal...nothing. He did tell me the differential fluid was dirty and that he replaced it with synthetic fluid.

After getting my keys back and the long cranking later I leave the parking lot only to find my brake peddle goes all the way to the floor. I pumped the brakes a few times and pressure came back until I get 1 mile down the road and the peddle goes all the way to the floor again. I took it back and they told me I busted a brake line. After a few heated words they told me they will replace them free of charge.

So now I set up an inspection with the GM dealer here in town for $75 (next Wednesday) and have them tell the other shop what to fix. How messed up is that?

I can see the hop from bad leaf springs but that wouldn't cause the wheel to squeal, would it? Only left hand turns (doesn't happen all the time) will cause it.

Assuming tire press is correct and tires arent mismatched (hadda ask,,sorry)..then something in the suspension is certainly not equal. is the rear ride height correct? steering wheel dead centered? Assuming the thing hasnt been wrecked or spring locator pins arent sheared,,,i,d still question the right spring pack..or even a totally blown shock,,,,you need to get someone to put this in the air and have a real close look at things

    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled. Long after. 😬   https://www.enginelabs.com/news/tech-tips-replacing-ls-active-fuel-management-lifters-with-melling/   The Gen5 lifters operate the same as the LS versions. In fact they are the same lifter.    https://www.enginelabs.com/tech-stories/sorting-out-gen-v-lt-lifter-failure-with-a-simple-valvetrain-fix/
    • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.
    • Thank You.   So far my new ride is making me look like a genius for going with the 3.0L, as my first fuel refill occurred over three weeks from when I took delivery.  This engine combination is very amazing.  So far no issues and had not done a regen yet.
    • I am curious as to how much fluid you put back in the transmission ( assuming you had replaced the filter to compare to my findings ) and then went through the process of warming up the trans before pulling the check plug to drain out the excess and if you measured how much came back out.    I just found it surprising that some claimed a certain amount less fluid being put in and then draining some back out. The attitude of the truck as per if the surface is level and how the trucks stance is would make quite a difference since the check plug is right at the front of the transmission.
