Upgrading door speakers, keeping everything else the same

I think I might have a front passenger speaker going out. I can hear a faint rattle (like a dash rattle kinda) from the front passenger speaker area. Short of taking my door panel off, I cannot find anything loose that might be causing the noise so I'm going to assume is it the speaker.

From what I have gathered, the front and rear doors are 6.5" speakers. What I cannot find is what their power draw is (amps, watts, ohms, etc). Also, are the factory speakers 2-way, midrange, etc? Anybody know the dimensions as well? All the speakers that I have looked at are 4 ohms.

I want to replace them with something that will fit without modification so I'll probably order from crutchfield so I can get the installation kit/adapter. I'm not sure which brand I will go with but there are some that are 6.75" and it says they will fit a 6.5" opening. I want to keep my factory tweeters and sub so I want a speaker that will work with the factory stereo.

I've had good luck with both Alpines and Infinity but I'm open to others. I don't want to break the bank on speakers either.

Any suggestions?

I also checked the adapters at Crutchfield and I'd have to find a speaker that has a cutout diameter of 5 1/8" or less.

Don't use the adapters, they tend to rattle badly. If you get a pair of speakers that will fit a 6-3/4" application, you won't need them anyways.

Like thrunderstruck said, they were not as tight as I would have like them to be becuase of of the speparation between the bottom clip and the top screws from the speaker. So I ended up getting screws for mounting the speakers to the bracket that were long enough to reach the steel of the door and screw into it (after predilling of course). That made all the difference and now the speakers or super tight.

This way you can go with 6.5 - 6.75" speakers.

What about speaker type? 2-way, midrange, etc.

I want to keep my tweeters and sub and keep all factory controls, etc. Would a 2-way speaker be ok for this? I thought i saw somewhere that the factory speaker is 8 ohms but all I can find are 4 ohms. Is it ok to use a 4 ohm speaker?

I went with 2-way component and put the tweeter in the stock location. Sounds like you are thinking of putting a Coax 2-way in the doors and keep the stock tweeters? You can try that but you might get strange results since they are not timbre matched (different sounds from different materials, response leves, etc.). Also might get an echo since they are different distances from your ears. But I am just guessing, it may sound fine its just hard to say until you get them in there.

I wouldnt worry about 8 vs 4 ohms. If you were driving them with 100's of watts of power in some really complex and elaborate setup then it would be a concern but at the levels we are talking with the stock system it shouldnt be a problem.
