exhaust for 5.3 silverado z-71

Have a 99 silverado z-71 with the 5.3 and am looking to do an exhaust on it.  I do a bit of trailering and looking for more power and nice tone but not really a ear buster just alittle louder with some  more punch any suggestions.  Have been looking at the gibson swept side cat back set up single pipe.

Gibson is a very good candidate.  It will give you a free-flowing exhaust without the "extremely" loud noise.  I am very happy with mine.  Nice throaty sound.

I also have a Borla that I am happy with.

 

A little resonance at highway speeds but otherwise pretty quiet until you get on it.  Then it sound...well...like a Borla.

I've got the Gibson one that goes in exactly the same spot as the stock one.  Nice, mellow sound to it, not loud but sounds good.  My buddy (who has a 01 Z71 as well) has the Gibson the exits in front of the rear wheels.  It's pretty d@mn loud but there is not much benefit to that (in terms of hp/torque gain).  Hope that helps.

Anybody have experience with MagnaFlow mufflers?  I put a Flowmaster on my 01 Tahoe 5.3 and I am slowly tiring of the noise.  I would like to know, if you have a MagnaFlow muffler, what model, and how loud is it while driving down the freeway at approx 70 MPH? Do you get that constant Resonance or a light/barely noticeable sound?

The Flowmaster is great for around town, but when I am on a long drive, the resonance gets old!!

I called up Flowmaster and they told me to save my money on the cat back system and just go with the muffler. I got the big block 70 series II.  He told me that since our trucks already come with a stainless system and as close to a mandrel bend as possible that replaceing the muffler would have the same effect as a cat back but less the cash. Only would the cat back really make a difference is if you were bracket racing the thing.

 

Makes sence to me. I wanted to put the 2500HD tail pipe on mine just for the looks of that massive thing but the local muffler shop couldn't adapt it.

 

Mine runs nice and quiet but louder than stock. You can tell sitting inside the truck but not bad enough on long 80+mph trips on the highway to bother you. It has a flowmaster sound but with a mellow tone. Hard to explain but if you know a flowmaster's sound then you could tell that one is on my truck just without all the noise. Most like the noise but I'm for one not into it on a daily driver.

 

Now my 65 Impala SS with the 396 has headers and dual 40 series flowmasters, with 2.5 inch pipes. Now that is sweet but then I drive it for fun and not an everyday thing.

 

It surprised me to hear the tech at flowmaster to tell me to save the cash and just get the muffler but then again he is right, I don't bracket race the truck.

Sound (no pun intended LOL) advice to me! My neighbor who has a 03 Tahoe, put on the Catback, and he feels that the gain is minimal in relation to the noise factor.  I still have the stock exhaust. I won't do anything until the factory one is ready to replace, then I will tink about it.

I too was looking into a Magnaflow Cat-back.  I have heard good things from people on other forums as far as the deep mellow sound and no resonation at highway speeds.  I think I will wait until my stocker gets rotted though.  I have other things to spend my money on for now.

I understand the money factor cause being married with twin girls and buying a house that can add up quick. If your going to wait till the factory system goes, well it will be a long time. My dad has an 89 GMC S-15 and he still has the factory system on it with 90k on the truck. Most of that is city miles to, which usually makes the system go out sooner. I guess he is just lucky.  They are making some things to last now adays.

You will wait for a long time for the original muffler to die. We just gave a 86 S-10 to charity which still had the original muffler with 250,000 miles on the Blazer.

I have 2 Flowmaster 40 series with 3" chrome tips.  Looks and sounds great, no resonance at highway speed.  Had local muffler shop install it.  True dual exhaust from the cats on back.

You guys may be right on the time to decay factor on the exhaust. I think I will at least wait ubtil my payments are done. At least I can get some satisfaction knowing the stock system lasted through the payments. My wife might not be so mad at me for spending the money since the payments would be done!
