Replacing 2 10s with single Sub

If I wanted to replace the pair of 10s under my back seat, what size sub would be a decent replacement for similar performance?

I know its a wierd question since most people want to increase their system size, but I want some of the storage back underneath my seat.

i just installed 2 10" alpine type r's in my brothers tahoe, in a ported box. IMO they sound better than a pair of 12s.

the mounting depth on those is deep though, i don't think one will fit under the seat. IMHO JL Audio makes the best sound systems. check out their W6, W3, and new TW5. any of those should fit in a box under your back seat! they also make a stealthbox system that only takes up half the space under the back seats

I like the way my 10s sound, so I dont want to loose any quality. I dont pound the bass very much, but I do like it to hit when I crank it up. I mainly just like the nicely rounded sound quality that the subs add to the factory mids. What I really want to do is replace the pair with a single but still be able to rock out.

Would a single 12 be able to reproduce the same quality of sound in a box that only takes up half of the space under the seat? Sorry I didnt make it clear in my OP. I was thinking it, but just didnt type it.

Here is a similar setup to what Im thinking about, except only running the passenger side and leaving the driver side empty to store some tools and what-not.

I have always been a big fan of Image Dynamics subs. I have two ID12s on order right now. I would suggest one ID12 (or an IDQ12 for a few more bucks). I had two IDQ12s back in the Day in a 3 cubic foot box ported to 28hz and the clarity was awesome.

if you want a lot of rumble, go with 12s, but if you want the bass to be crisp without a lot of rumble, stick with 10s or even drop to an 8"

To answer your question, no, you will not get the same output from a single 12" v.s. dual 10"s. However, that dosen't mean that you can't put something that will fill your needs with output and give you the storage space you are looking for.

If you could get away with a ported 12", that would be your closest bet in terms of "matching" (and I hate to use that word), the 10"s. Keep in mind thought that ported will take up more room than a sealed box...

Whats your budget and what amp are you using?

Ive been playing on Sketchup trying to design a box to fit a 12 that will still fit under the seat. I cant seem to get the internal volume up to the minimum requirements for a sealed box, much less a ported one. It doesnt appear that Im gonna be able to acheive the outcome Im looking for. Something is going to suffer, either sound quality or storage space.

Im mainly looking into some storage options for all of the junk in my toolbox. Im wanting to put a camper shell on so the toolbox has to go. I though about some different toolboxes in the bed, but since Im actually going to be camping out of the bed, I dont want to tie up too much space.

I guess its just an inavoidable inverse relation. Sound or storage. To increase one, the other must decrease.

But Im gonna have to remove the toolbox to put the camper on. Its a cross-bed box.

Well whatever you do just make sure you match the min/max. Cu. Ft ported or sealed box you use and the top mounting depth to insure the best possible sound. Don't forget you may need to upgrade the amp also.
