Problem 03 rearview mirror compass

The compass/thermometer in my 03 rearview mirror is behaving badly. WIth a passenger seated (activating the air bag) the light would flicker on and off and the temperature/compass display would flash 188. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I'm having a similar problem in my 04 Suburban. Did you ever get to the bottom of it?
