Hello, I have been cruising around though these forums gathering info about some upgrade to do to my truck. I found a recommendation for Gregg at CPS audio out of CA for the factory nav units and decided to go for it. I decided to go with the USB nav unit over the 2012 hd unit mainly due to cost and I really do not care about recording live radio and uploading music to my truck when I can hook up an Ipod for a fraction of the cost. Pictured below is my 2012 Silverado LS package I purchased as demo two months ago.

The funny thing is I test drove this exact truck earlier this year to get my free Daytona 500 tickets. I wanted a single cab and was interested driving one and the owners nephew was demoing the only one the dealership owned. I just think it is funny that when I finally became finacially able to purchase it they still had it and owner reconized me giving me and excellant deal of about 3000 under stick out the door with tax and title fees. Well enough about how I got the truck here is the stock radio setup.

bare with me I am a night owl. The first thing i had to do was remove the passenger side pillar as show below. Two ten millimeter bolts attach the "oh shit" handle and spring cllip hold the actual pillar in place.

This afforded me the room to lift up the forward part of the dash pad to install my GPS anttena in the factory location. I was worried that my LS dash would not have the provision but luckely I was proven wrong.

After cliping the anttena in place I proceeded to remove the from dash trim which is held on by spring clips and removed the climate control which was attached with two 7 millimeter screws and the radio which is held in place with 4 more 7 millimeter screws. The climate control panel has to be removed first.

With radio removed (which i was disapointed to find out it was not a usb radio) ifished the gps wire, vss cable and since my truck did not come with bose I had to use a intermiddiant harness to add an amplifier.

with harnesses in place I proceeded to install my head unit and climate controll back in place.

it works!!!

Next I routed the amp towards the glove box and removed the passenger air bag by removing 4 10 millimeter bolts. When doing this be very carefull. I chose to leave it connected during the process as I did not want to have to visit the dealer ship in fear of loosing my truck due to the lemon law. From what I understand and I may be wrong GM will buy the truck back if there was an issues with the SRS system on a new vehicle. I installed my amp ontop of the heater box close to the fire wall with command strip lol. Wally World was our of molding double sided tap. I did not want to come home empty handed and not be able to finish. the state the Command strip will hold up to 5 lbs per strip and it is made my 3m so I felt I could trust it. I decide to wedge the amp with a piece of folded card board under the defroster piping. The amp that is used sounds ten time better in my opinion over the factory radio I pulled out. I feel minus the Bose sub it sound pretty close to the premium sound GM offers

When replaceing the air bag do not let it hang from the cover as it will concave the dash pad. Lift it up enough to take the load off the cover. I torqued the bolt down to 80 in pounds. the metal tabs in the following pic is what attaches the air bag to the cover.

lastly for the time being I had to run the VSS cable to my junction box in the drivers floor board and solder the wire in. I had to extend the wire that came with it so it would reach, no big deal.

Also when i replace the "oh shit" handle i torque to 80 in pounds as well. I did not get this torque value out of any manual. I choose that value because the intake manifold bolts are the same size and require similar torque. If I remember the intake bolts went from 40 in lbs the first round and 88 in lbs the second round. With wheels and exhaust and navi I am pretty proud of my truck. I now need to install my rear winch quick disconnect and dual battiers. My 18ft car hualler has a 8k lbs winch i did not want a battery left on my tounge as batteries will bring up to 25 dollars each at the scrap yard

All i need to do to finish the project run two wires from the radio to the VCIM to connect my mic to the radio so the voice commands work as my truck was not wired for this option since it is an LS and install my usb port in the upper glove box. I will post the pictures as soon as the parts needed arrive. As for the cost just give Gregg at CPS audio as prices varry depending on you vin. my set up was 1400 since I needed the amp. It also included a new XM module that is set up for nav traffic and current map disc. I am waiting for my free sub to expire on my current unit. Gregg said I should be able to pull another free sub with the radio. He had quoted me about 2200 for the 2012 Hard Drive unit, but as I said earlier the features were not worth the price difference to me. he also has non usb Navs for less. They can be reached at 707-588-9300. I hope this helps someone in need. thank you for reading.

BTW my wife was pissed. lol the truck has 3000 miles on it and i am already taking it apart lol

the amp cable is about 4 feet. It is long enough to go anywere in the dash or center console.

Thank you, I have really enjoyed it so far until I hit the pump you know what I mean. But, that only last 5 minutes lol. I totaled my 2008 Mazda 3 and bought this as a replacement. Now I have 3 v8's in my drive.

My usb harness and voice command jumper wires should be in next week, so hopefully i will be able to finish my install. I am going to install my usb port in my upper glove box (got the idea from a thread on here or on another gm forum). I am a stickler about everything working as it should from the factory. Gregg told me the voice command should be very easy to do as i just need to add two wires from my radio connector to the vcim. I am also in the process of purchaseing a reverse camera. The radio was shipped with the feature already unlocked.

recieved the cables I need to finish my install. I am excited, my wife cringes when she gets in my truck and sees part of the dash removed.

had you looked into an advent ogm1? any reason you went for the oem unit? i prefer mine far over the factory nav and it appears with a lot less of headache. (and lower cost)

I did but I prefer factory since I know there will not be any integration issue or quirks. And this radio is still covered under my bumper to bumper warranty. And I did not spend much more as the radio was nearly the same price as the ogm-1 but I bought a new xm brain with nav traffic and external amp wIth all the wIrIng.. I still did not need to visit the dealer as it was already flashed with my vin. Again the 3 year 36000 mile warranty sold me on thIs setup. I bought this truck 2 months ago new so I a lot of warranty left.

not sure i understand how it's covered under your factory warranty when you added it yourself, tapped into wires, and there's no record of it in any gm database but whatever works! I could understand if the dealership installed it/sold it to you... Does the oem nav let you set destinations/find POI's while driving? or only while in park?

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
