After a long decision process, I finally got a Magellan Meridian Gold off of Ebay. Still haven't messed with it alot yet, but it really seems like a cool toy.

Those GPS's are cool!!!  They are great if you like to hunt/ride 4-wheelers/or fish!!!  Heck they are fun even if you don't do any of the above!!!

Sweet.  Gps is fun.  I love my Garmin 12Map, I use it when I go offroading and all.

Have also been using it a ton at work to get coordinates for wells that I have been searching for here in the Vegas.  Mark all the wells as waypoints when I find them, so that they can be added into the database for measurement if they are useful or even use it to find some off of old map lat/longs.  I could use the Department of Defense units to do all of this, but they are confusing to use, and then the whole security risk involved with those.  Those units are secure items that have the special codes to use the military GPS channels.  If one gets lost or stolen it would be horribly bad...

Sin, Drop me an e-mail with the details on your GPS again(model, etc).  How do you have the antenna wired for the Rado- if you do.  Thanks.

Well, we just talked about this on IM.  But I felt like making a useless post...

I own the Magellan Sport Trac hand held  GPS. I use it to navigate in the desert to locate gold claim corners. I give the coordinanates to friends who can find me out there with little or no other directions. The WAAS capable units are the most accurate today but last weekend a friend navigated his way to my gold claim in the Mojave and he used a Garmin ETREX. I think it cost him about $90.00. I have found that accuracy varies from 1' to 30' on the unit I use. Even at 30' error I think it is close enough for my needs.

I read in the paper this morning that some hikers were lost in the mountians and used a cell phone to call for help. Took the rescue people many hours to find them. Had they had a GPS with them they could have given the exact location where they were and been rescued rather quickly.

Take it in your truck and check the accuracy of your speedometer.  Works well for that too.  I have a Garmin eTrex Hunter that just does the basic stuff-you can't load a map into it though.

The GPS solved the problem that I had with my 10 year old boy. On a long trip we all hear the old "are we there yet dad" and "How much farther dad" I gave him the GPS and showed him hot to use it and now he is the navigator. He eports location, distance to our destination and it keeps him very entertained. On the other hand now I hear "dad you're going over the speed limit again." Well it's still fun to have him interested in the technology. nest I'm going to teach him how to plan a route on a topo map.
