iPad Mini Mounted in GM Truck?

I already own 2 companies that I am constantly developing product for, so I just don't have the time or energy needed to get this off the ground. Getting it made is the easy part... marketing, selling etc is all the stuff I don't have the time or interest in for this product. As I said, if someone else wants to tackle that I would be glad to pitch in my design to help, and even develop it a little further so it's more refined and ready for market if some was interested.

 

Once you narrow it down to truck owners, GM specific owners, Year 07-current NBS owners, this dash/trim style in the vehicle, and combine all of that criteria with users who want to do an iPad install... the numbers start getting pretty small. (since this mount only works for this vehicle)

 

Aside from those 2 issues, there is also nothing proprietary that requires extreme skill or knowledge to create this item. Any car audio manufacturer that produces dash kids for single/double din decks could whip one of these up in no time if they wanted to.. and also sell them immediately through all their distribution channels all around the world. I am not involved in this industry, and I have zero connections to make that happen quickly, and without a proprietary item it gives me nothing to take to one of those manufacturers to license to them.

 

and last but not least, by the time someone could take this to market, apple would be introducing the shiny new iPad mini with retina display, that is now thinner and doesn't not work properly with my mount.

 

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for people to have an enjoy them... but making that happen wont be my headache

After 37 years as an installer, I absolutely understand all the points you bring up. I've been in the same position many, many times myself - only so many hours in a day/week/month, and oh, you want to have a personal life and accomplish other things too? I understand...

 

My only point was that since you already had the part essentially done and readily reproduce-able, it may not be too much of a stretch to put a price on it (making it worth your while, of course) and see if anyone else wants to give it a go.

Yeah I hear you... I guess no one else has done it for the same reasons, not to mention how difficult it would be to make them for many different vehicles. Sure enough you would get that far, and the first call or email you get would be asking for a vehicle that you haven't produced one for yet.

Over all I am very happy with it. On the dash mount I would change a couple small things just because I am a perfectionist... but for a couple hours of design on a saturday, without a physical iPad in my hands I am pretty happy with how it turned out. The main thing I love is no fiberglass, easily removable iPad for theft reasons, and I can put my truck back to the factory radio and dash when ever I need to.

 

Oh, and when I am parked at home, my iPad syncs over wifi through iTunes, and iCloud when I am on the go or at home. Perfect!

 

Great looking install. I'm getting ready to do this in my 2007 Silverado using the universal slider kit from soundmanca since I have no skill in 3D modeling and don't have access to 3D printers.

 

What apps have you found most helpful to have on your new "dashboard"? I was thinking of using these as a start but would love you hear if you've found others:

 

OBD2 Fusion for access to more information from the car via a WiFi ODB2 dongle

Waze: A great navigation app that uses social network to alert you of hazards in the road or speed traps

 

 

AAA Mobile

 

 

Overcast: podcast player (much better than the Apple one IMHO)
