Diff Cover Liquid Gasket Question

Recommended Posts

Posted

Just changed the rear diff gear oil today and man was it completely black, smelled horrible too. I don't think it has ever been changed before unless they picked up a gasket from the dealership cause I couldn't find one at the auto parts store. I have used RTV before on valve covers and such but this was the first for the diff cover. Now my main concern is that I was recommended Form-a-gasket 2, it is non hardening and that concerns me. I looked at the package and it says for oil pans, tranny pans, etc but I just want to make sure this was the correct stuff and I'm not spending an extra $40 or so for the gear lube, royal purple, any thoughts or concerns?

Diff gaskets aren't that hard to find normally. I just use the gaskets and just not worry about it.

So far its held up with zero leaks so I'm not too worried. Will check in intervals on my 17 hour journey to Texas.
