How to stop rusting? 3M chrome film?

My girlfriend has a 2012 GMC Sierra crew cab we bought her about 8 months ago now. It came with the chrome fender well trim on the truck, and it has since started to rust already. Needless to say, we are pretty upset. I am thinking of taking them off as we all know it will rust behind them due to sand and dirt vibrating.

My question is, how does one maintain this stuff so it does not rust? My truck has the chrome trim package on the bottom of the body panels, which I like, but it to has some small rust spots in it after only 18 months. They are very minimal yet, as a few seconds of rubbing with your finger will make the rust disappear.

I heard somewhere a few years ago, that 3M actually makes a chrome film, that can be installed, instead of chrome or stainless steel. Has anyone heard of this? It seems like that would be the best way to go because it could never rust, and does not need to be polished.

I like chrome, and intend to keep it, so please don't respond telling me to make my truck look like a base model WT by taking all the extras off.

What is a good way to seal the bumpers and extra chrome, so that this won't continue to be an issue?

Thanks!

chrome should not rust. It will rust from the inside out or if it has like dissolved iron coming off the vehicle onto the chrome but a chrome piece should last you 30 years with a little bit of polishing .

I would take it to the dealer! My truck was 6 months old when I had rust showing threw my bumper from the back, they replaced it

I had actually forgotten about the iron chunks that can come off of new trucks. Maybe this is what is causing the rust? I will have to look into it further. The rust is tiny spots all over the place, like dabs with a pen. That would add up with pieces of iron coming off of all the new components.

This is aftermarket wheel opening trim - correct?

Good quality should be stainless steel.
