Volant or K&N

I'm thinking about instaling an improved air breathing system in my 2003 2500HD 6.0. Are the aftermarket units(Volant or K&N) worth the money and if so which is better. As I've said before I tow a 6000 lb trailer and want the pulling performance up the grades.

When someone asks, "which is better, A or B?" , I am very hesitant to say, "look at C."  But, I  really would at least look at C,  and in this case that is the UPD--http://www.ultimatepd.com

If you do a search in the 1500,the 2500 and the engine and aftermarket area, you will find some owners. Someone and I don't remember who, even went to the trouble to dyno the differences.  You draw cooler air, have less chance of water contamination and still use a K&N filter.

Good luck on whatever you choose.

I never thought this was gonna be a problem but there you go. The wife set the computer to log in as her (batgirl) I didnt notice till I posted. Gotta set this thing up to log in manually every time now.

Thanks again TxDoc. I'm looking for those postings right now.

Definately check out the UPD.  I have one on my Silverado and I absolutely love it.

Check them out, there is a link on the left column.  UPD is a preferred vender here at GMTC, so give them a look.

If you like the sound of the "ole 4-barrel" then you'll love a new intake.  The performance increase is negligable, but that is because I don't think you can get the "seat of the pants" feel on less than 10 HP.  However I did notice a fuel MPG increase with the FIPK when I had it on my '00 1500 Silverado, so it must have done something right...

same prediciment here.

Sincity can you elaborate on the UPD?  Pros cons.  Milage with and without (dont really care but just curious).  Ease of install?  Performance?

Thanks  :)

Sure.  Mileage wise it stayed about the same...just a little increase, nothing much, then again with the added power, I drive even more heavy footed now...lol  Besides I had no mileage to begin with, #### city driving...

The sound is nice, more noticable, but not too loud at all.

Definately notices a power increase all around.

And I really like the fact that it is a closed system unlike the K&N, cause after some of the off-roading and all that I have done, the filter and all have stayed clean, but the rest of the stuff under the hood was covered completely in mud...with the K&N the filter would have been buried under mud which is bad...

I can't really think of any cons, only one would be it is a bit harder to install then they say, and you may have to trim the fan shroud slightly to make sure the tube doesn't rub.

Anyways, I highly recomment it.  Hopefully some of the other with it will chime in, because I have heard only great things about it.

Ryan, they have been around at least a couple of years from what I know.  They only do stuff for GM trucks also.  Besides I am sure Zane wouldn't let a bad company be a vendor, he is on top of things.

I don't have any pics of mine, I wish I had a digi camera cause I would run out and snap a pic...but here is a link to TxDoc picture site... http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery....=147085

He has a UPD on his 03, it is a 6.0, but they look the same for all of the engines to give you an idea of what it is like.

All I can say is that I am very satifised with the product and the company and would recommend their system to anyone.  Seems to be the best system for our trucks IMO. :)

I have the K&N FIPK system.  First off, I love the sound...as Shaners said, it sounds like a 4 barrel opening up when you are in the throttle.  When I received the K&N, they gave me a dyno printout of what my engine does after the install.  I almost gained 8hp.  Not sure if I can feel it in my pants when driving, but I have noticed that when I am lugging the engine at highway speeds, it will maintain a gear longer when I hit a hill.  (some small test's I did before & after with cruise control locked at 70mph).  As for MPG, I havent noticed anything due to winter gas showing up after my install and the fact that I cant keep my foot out of it to hear the sound, LOL!   :)

As for K&N being bad because of its "open" design is some hogwash IMO.  I run a K&N on my 400EX (ATV) with no airbox lid.  Let me tell you, I put my quad in more places than most trucks will ever be, and my filter is COVERED by the end of the day.  I give it a quick clean job, and notice that nothing got past the filter when I look at the intake tube.  Both filters are built out of the same material too.  This is what made me go with K&N in the first place.  Works great for my quad in conditions 10x worse than what my truck will ever see.

So far though, I give it two thumbs up.  :thumb:

I'm not a big fan of the UPD's  can't stand their looks really

I love my airaid, it sure helped on fuel mileage... the only thing I would replace it with is one of those new dual air-intakes
