Broken Snap Ring in Transfer Case

2007 new body style 4wd Sierra SLT 1500 crew cab. I've been having some speedo problems and grinding sounds ( I think coming from the transfer case) when shifting between drive and reverse. I found a service bulletin from GM saying the casue is likely a broken snap ring in the transfer case. The dealer is telling me that in my truck its not possible to replace the snap ring and that I'd be on the hook to buy a whole new transfer case at about $1800 bucks plus labour. I think that's bull and he's trying to suck me in to spending extra $$$ in repairs that I don't need. I can't imagine that the transfer case is garbage just because of a broken snap ring??? He said the "shop foreman" confirmed that the snap rings in these trucks cannot be repaired and I would have to buy a new transfer case to fix the problem. Does that sound right?

sounds like a line of BS to me but ya never know till its on a bench and apart with a phone on your ear trying to find one

 

so it has to come out and apart first to find this broken snap ring
