my gear selector lost its detents

I have a 1988 GMC 2500 van. The gear selector detents suddenly are not there. The problem is evidently in the steering column assembly. My Haynes manual mentions a shifter tube adjustment ring but I don't see it.

you mean the shifter is not showing the gear selected on the IPC ? or the transmission detent in the transmission is not locking the shifter shaft in the correct position ?
