Fuel Pump or Ignition switch?

Recommended Posts

I have a 96 with a 5.7. I have normally jumped in turned the key and it fired immediately and away I went. Recently, I have turned the key and the engine turned abit before it would fire. (Even died a few times when I put in drive and applyed pedal.)

I was thinking fuel pump failure, but I noticed today when I turned the key, I listened for the fuel pump and couldn't hear it. Then I noticed I couldn't hear any of the common sounds, except the stereo. About 5 seconds later the buzzers all came on (as well as the fuel pump) and I fired and went my way. Any ideas what the problem might be?

No, none of the lights or buzzers come on until they all come on. The radio is on and there is power to the starter if I advance the ignition. Moments of a second before the lights come on, I hear a click (like a circuit) behind the dash.?????

I spoke w/a mechanic this morning on phone, he encouraged me to start w/battery cables (there are two on positive side). He mentioned one may not be conected well, but still no luck.
