Performance programmer recommended for 1500 with 71/2" lift and 35

My son has recently purchased a 2010 GMC Sierra Crew Cab Z71 with 5.3, 76,000 miles. He is adding 71/2" Rough Country Lift (for some crazy reason they do not make a 6" lift), 20" XD Monster Wheels and 35x12.5 Nitto Trail Grapplers. The offroad shop recommends adding the performance programmer to correct the difference in wheel size, change the shift point, help with MPG and power. I have read on various forums that would agree with that assessment but I have also read some who recommend regearing first. The programmer is $330 whereas regearing will be a minimum of $1400. What are your thoughts?

the custom tune from black bear with the auto cal (hand held) will run you approx. $575, so its in between the options you're lookin at. Don't have one personally but have heard nothing but great things from the guys that have them.
