Need help w/ gauges!

I'll make this the short version. I installed white face gauge insert on my 2000 Silverado. They didnt come with instructions so i figuredi would take offf the gauge pod and do everything up to the point of removing and replacing the insert or sticker or whatever you want to call it. well i didnt know you were supposed to write down the location of the  needles before you start moving them.well guess what ? i moved them. i have no idea where they were before i jacked with them ??? now i have re-installed the gauge cluster and all of my readings are wacky! does anybody know how to re-calibrate the needles so that they are reading correctly?????   :cheers:

If you give us the motor size and rear gear ratio I know we can help you...

 

I think on all GM trucks RPM on warm idle is about 600-650.

 

Fill your gas tank up and reseset the fuel needle.

 

Your Alternator should read between 1/2 and 2/3 when the truck has been run and the battery fully charged.  Probably closer to 2/3.

 

We all know what our stock gauges read so let us know what you need...

My Oil Pressure reads 40 at idle.

As far as the speedo, this is what I would do. Install the needle resting on the black point. Drive the truck. If the needle doesn't go up as soon as you start moving forward, keep reinstalling it until it does. :cheers:  :wtf:

leave the window of the gauge cluster off and then start the truck... the internal springs of the cluster will move the needles,  easy pry off the needles and push them on this location... but only push easy because if you push them down all the way  they will drag

 

Fuel:  try to remember what you had, or fill up and set it at F

temp: 100 cold idle

volt: 14-16 idle

mph: 0 idle

rpm: 1000-2000 idle

oil: 40-60 idle

 

if you have the tranny temp gauge just set it at the lowest setting at cold idle.

I think your RPM is a tad high.  It should be around 600rpms once its warmed up at idle.

I dont mean to get off topic here, but I've NEVER had my truck idle over 1000 rpms when cold (below 30-40 degree's).  Even when I start it in the morning with temps around 0 degree's its still around 1000 then kicks down to about 600.  Has your truck actually seen almost 2000 rpms while when at idle?

My truck idles

 

warm - 500 rpms

cold (30 degrees and lower as of late) - 700-900rpms

Last week when it was about 10 degrees, my truck ran at 1800rpm briefly, then quickly dropped to 1200 rpm, hovered there for about 2 1/2 minutes then dropped to about 850.  

 

Then i started driving.

Thats odd.  I wonder what makes the truck idle at 1800 rpms vs 900 rpms when cold (10 degree's or colder).  I've started mine below zero and it always idles "high" at one RPM range 900-1000rpms.  Anyone know what conditions must be present for a very high idle????

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
