Powder Coated Bumpers

Has anyone powder coated their chrome bumpers and what do you do with the sensors to match the bumper?

I've never done it. But i would imagine powdercoat bumpers and then paint the sensors so they wouldn't get damaged in the heat.

Yes it is. We tried to sand blast the chrome to etch it before epoxy priming it. Well as soon we hit it with the blaster it bubbled up the chrome and we had to peel all the chrome off by hand then, adhesion promotor, 2k high build prime, sand, epoxy prime, then base/clear. It was a real pain in the ***!

I found this posted over at performance trucks seems like painting the bumpers can be a real nightmare I wonder if powdercoat would be any easier :dunno:

Powder coating them is certainly possible. Like any painting process, prep is important. Color matching will be unlikely, if not impossible. If you want flat or gloss black, you're in luck. Matching metallic...I don't think so. My general feeling about powder coat painting is that it is more durable than most conventional paints (but not all), but it doesn't have the quality of flatness and gloss. It is, after all, melted plastic. Powder coat painting was developed for high production painting. Keep that in mind when you deal with one of these companies that's used to painting hundreds or thousands of the same thing.

If you want to paint a chromed bumper, you might check with a bumper chroming or other chroming shop and have them strip the chrome in nitric acid. No muss, no fuss, no blistered chrome, no grinding marks. But still, you really gotta want a painted bumper bad to go thru all this.
