Hello, I have a 1990 gmc sierra 5.7l

I dont really know much about the engine tho..

heres the ?:

Since i have a 350, how do i make it a 383 stroker?

what need to be done to make it a  383? and how much will it cost just for the parts?

Also what power/torque increase will it have?

Right now i have k&n air filter, Helix power tower, a superchip, and just aftermakret exhaust with soon to be flowtech header? or hedman ?

How familiar are you with the inside of an engine?

The main thing you have to change to make a 350 into a 383 (or a 396) is a new crankshaft.  Depending on the quality of this part, it can cost between $200 and $2500.

When you change the "crank" you will definately have to change the crank bearings and rod bearings. (another $20-$50)  It would be very wise, and probably necessary to change your connecting rods as well, depending on the journal size of the crank. (another$200 to $1500)

To maintain the correct/desired compression, you will also need new pistons (rings, bushings, hone bores).  That will cost you another $300 to $1000.

Then there is the machine work on the block (or a new one) that will cost you $250-$5000 depending on how "nice" you "need".

Then comes the camshaft choice ($150-$500).  That depends entirely on the other parts you have chosen.

So far we have covered just about everything in the "short block" (under the heads).  This does not include gaskets, seals, oil pump, oil pan, etc.

For everything to work well together, you will probably need/benefit from new heads, intake, carb, valvetrain.

That will just about cover the motor.  Then you need to start thinking about a torque converter and gears to best use the new power from your motor.

2wd or 4wd?

What kind of driving do you do?  (town/highway, avg speed)

Gears = $150-$200 for GM gears (usually the quietest)

Install = $200-$250 (I wouldn't try it yourself)

You will need to calibrate the speedometer.

you can buy 383 stroker kits to build up the 350. I have seen them online for around $450. don't know if that helps much. I don't remember the site or anything, but I found it by typing 383 stroker kits on google. hope that helps some.

MarkD is exactly right-depending on how trick you want to get, you can spend a fortune.  Right up to the point, as a matter of fact, to where it may be cheaper to buy a whole new engine instead of rebuilding the one you have.  Just remember that with engine kits/rebuilds/etc.-you get what you pay for.  Just do your research as to what you really need (e.g. do you need a nitrite-treated crank, or will a GM performance crank do?  Do you need forged pistons, or will cast pistons do?) and price it that way.  After you do all that-find a reputable machine shop.  Because no matter how expensive the parts are, they still won't do any good in an engine that misassembled.

Hope this helps-Fitz. :thumb:

The pro's over at "Summitt" are very helpful on this subject. Read, read & read some more. There are some veriations on this mod so read read read. They will give you cost as well. I have all parts except the crank at this point to build on of my own. Oh, I also need (want) some new heads!!!!
