AM radio not working on MyLink

On my 2014 Chevy Siverado Z71 I just recently upgraded the Navigation installing new HMI module. I never use AM radio hardly at all but tuned there Saturday to listen to ball game and noticed all I had was noise. FM works fine and XM Preview is fine.

 

I never checked this prior to the HMI module replacement, also Mike tells me that should not effect am radio.

 

I called dealer yesterday to setup recall service on ATP transfer case, and told them would like them to look at am radio. Earliest they could get me in was October 1st.

 

ANyone had a issue like this before

It's either an unplugged antenna cable, a bad antenna, bad cable connector or bad antenna cable itself - 99.9% guaranteed.

 

This is the classic symptom of a bad antenna system, and the reason is that that AM would work best with the longest antenna possible, and the antenna cable has to be free from shorts - in other words, the center conductor and the outer braided "shield" need to be separated and not shorted together.

 

FM doesn't do any better with a longer antenna and doesn't care if the center conductor and outer shield are shorted. You won't hear much difference on FM if you used the factory antenna or a coat hanger - as long as it's around 36" long, you're good to go.

 

In your case, they may have unplugged an antenna harness somewhere away from the back of the radio and forgotten to plug it back in - if there is an antenna extension plugged into the radio but not hooked to the antenna itself, FM will work and AM won't.

 

The basic test for a bad antenna system is simply tune to AM - if you get no or very little AM, and great FM, it's the antenna. If you get little or no FM and great AM, it's the radio. It's very slightly possible you could have a bad radio, but very doubtful.

 

Now you know more than a decent percentage of professional radio installers... :- )
