Allison filter?

Does anyone know the FRAM/Delco/whoever number for the spin-on external filter on the Allison tranny? Supposed to be changed at 7,500 miles.

Also, how much Dexron to add to top off after filter change?

I can't tell you the part number right off the bat, but I went and bought mine at my dealer and just replaced it myself. It cost (if memory serves) around $20 (!), and if you look closely enough at the filter casing, the part number is printed either on the side of it or on its bottom end. The dealer I got mine from has a huge parts department, so they had one in stock-but I would bet that it's easily ordered anyway. The real PITA is finding a filter wrench to take the old one off and then tighten the new one on. When you take the old one off, don't throw away the ring magnet that sits on top of it-it's easy to miss if you're not looking. I think that, with the change, I needed to replace 2-3 quarts of tranny fluid. Hope this helps-Fitz.

I got my filter for $12 on the net. Do a search on this forum for the filter. I can't remember where I got it. Other than that I think Wix/Napa has a filter now. You should only lose what the filter holds for fluid. Mine took a half a quart and I used Napa synthetic to top it off. The 25,000 mile filter and fluid change requires Dexron though according to the Allison site.

Roofer, while DexronIII will work, Allison ACTUALLY recommends a special synthetic mix that they have Castrol make for them called TranSynd.

And BC, how hard is it to find a claw style oil filter wrench. Just go to Snapon.com, look up oil filter wrenches and you'll see they have two claw (three finger style) wrenches. I have both, but the smaller one works on the Allison filter. This wrench along with a nice long extension also makes childs play of changing our engine's filter too!
