I have a 99 GMC sierra ext cab.   I am looking to upgrade this system some time over the summer.

My ? is how many watts is the factory head unit?  the basic one with tape player?

second, what size speakers can you fit in the front doors?

I've read you can up in a 5 1/4 in the back speakers to get better then the 4x6.

thanks

6 1/4 or 6 1/2 will fit in the front doors. Along with a 1" tweet.

5 1/4 will go in the back doors...If you do some trimming. I didn't feel like cutting up the truck, so I put Infiniti 4x6 plates in the back doors, and they do very well.

I'm not sure how many watts the stock head unit puts out, but if you are adding after market components up front...You really should amplify them. You wouldn't believe how much better they will sound.

He!!, even the factory speakers sound remarkably better when amplified. Not nearly as good as MB Quart, or Infiniti sound with the right power...But a lot better. I did this in a buddys truck. All stock speakers and head unit. Just added a 5 channel amp. 2 front 2 rear, and 1 to the 10" sub under the rear seat. I was impressed with how much the factory system sounded with just an amp and a sub added.

How many doors do you have in that there 99?

Without the fourth door, it will be a little more difficult to get to the rear speaker on that side.

You can't just pull the door panel off, as there is no door.

That said, it still isn't all that difficult. As most of the people here on this board have learned (some of us the hard way), the trick to the interiors is patience.

If you think you are pulling too hard, you are.

Look for another 7mm screw. There is always one you missed.

It's like a woman. To get what you wan't, go slow, be patient, and treat her right...She will bend to your will.

You WILL break something. Mentally prepare for it.

It will rattle after that.

Invest in some 3m double sided tape.
