Mystery Instrument Cluster

Okay, I'm having an issue with the cluster. They work in park, but as soon as you pull down into reverse, neutral, and overdrive, everything blacks out and nothing works. As soon as you pull it into third they start working again, also works in second. As soon as you put it in first same thing everything goes back off. I'm just confused and don't know where to start. Plugged a code reader in, no codes. But odd thing is with the code reader hooked up and I pull down through all the gears. Gauges work perfectly. Any ideas??

I'm no expert here, but that sounds like it could be a ground or a short issue. I'd locate the ground for the cluster circuit and make sure it's secure and clean. If it doesn't look like it's in a great place I'd even relocate it.
