Windshield Wiper Problem

Ok here's the deal.....our wipers quit working on us...you can hear the motor, but they don't actually move.

Our mechanic said the gears were stripped and he ordered a new wiper motor. He installed the motor and now the wipers only work on high, however at the same time when they are on, wiper fluid shoots out the holes onto the windshield. They can't get this to stop (unless they turn off the wipers).

Now when they hook back up the old motor and touch it to something metal, it starts sparking like crazy.

Anyone had this problem, or have any ideas on what could be wrong? How about the wiper stalk inside the truck? Could that be the problem?

Actually if someone has access to AllData, can you please look to see if there is a T.B. for the wiper stalk & send it to me?!

There were circuit board problems for the wiper motor in the mid to late '90s trucks. I think GM is standing behind the problem...

It sounds like you have a bad wire somewhere, and it could very possibly be in the "smart switch" turn signal stalk...

It is definetly a circuit card problem and the guy at the dealership should have known about it. I had to replace mine on my 95 Sierra and I had a buddy that did the same on his 94 Silverado. There is a recall on this, but for some reason mine was not covered under the reacall. Circuit board costs about $50 bucks at the dealership but well worth it. Very simple and easy to replace. Three screws, unhook the connection, rehook and rescrew. I would recommend putting a sealant around the casing to keep out moisture and dust. Mine didn't have any sealant when I opened it and there was alot of dust in the housing. I am 99% sure this will fix your problem as I had the same problems as you are describing. Good Luck

Well the mechanics said it's a wiring problem in the signal stalk, which isn't cool because they are about $350 and its not covered under warranty. I'll ask them to check into the circuit board problem too...

BTW I don't take it to the dealership - we don't have any chevy dealers around here that I trust. I have a mechanic that I've been taking my car to for years.

Sorry bout the dealership commit, I don't take mine to them either, so I know where you are coming from. If you open up the casing to the board, which is right at the w/w motor next to the firewall, you may be able to look at it and see some apparent problems. Some say it is a simple sodor joint fix. May be able to see the sodor damage. Either way good luck, but I would take a shot at the circuit card first instead of the expensive repair to the signal stalk. That is what I thought mine was at first.

I have a 94 Silverado and the wipers gradually quit working. What I mean by this is it would take them 5-10 min. to work after turning switch on. I replaced the wiper motor with new one and wipers still did not work. Checked new motor on wifes 2000 S-10 Blazer and it worked fine. Could this be just in switch or am I lookin at a $350 signal stalk?

On your '94 I would suggest a $35 board.

When you swapped out motors with wifeys truck, did you swap boards to??? The mid '90s trucks are known to have bad circuit boards in them for the wipers. What seems to be happening is that the solders are breaking in between circuits. I think that would be the place to look first.

I hope I didn't misunderstand your post.

I just took my 95 in today for the circuit board fix...I gave the service manager all the info from the internet on recall #'s etc. They fixed it in one hour...no charge..awsome.....still some good GM dealers left.
