mounting xm antenna

I broke down and bought an XM unit, and am looking at the Terk TRK-SR1 or SR1XM (they appear to be the same).  It is a "through the glass" unit, meaning no holes to be drilled or wires to route to the outside.

Question 1: Is anyone currently using this, and did the window tinting cause you a problem?  My truck is a 2002 ext cab Silverado with the dark tinted windows..

Question 2:  If using a different antenna, how have you routed your wires?  I really do not want to drill any additional holes in the truck.

Thanks,

Brent Roth

Run it out the third brake light hole. I didnt have to drill anything. Tightening the brake light back down on the rubber seals it. I would not have done it any other way. Runs right around edge of headliner down side and to behind seat where I assume you put the receiver.  :smash:

I haven't mounted the receiver yet, as I haven't received it yet.  I'm not sure of the best place to locate it in an extended cab.  Is there room behind the rear seat?

I like the idea of using the brake light hole!  I'm even liking the Terk TRK-SR2 antenna better.

It is much easier to use an existing hole. I mounted my receiver and the back wall with a couple of short screws. Had to remove the back seat (wasnt hard). I put the actual modulator in the dash behind stereo, attached it with a screw into the air duct and packed it with a little foam for no rattles. I used double sided tape to attach the lcd right under the stereo/ac area. I will try to attach pics. I love the system. I got mine from circuit city for about $100 and if you go online and order sirius you save 15 off the start up fee.

You say the antenna is the thru window unit?

You dont need to run any wires thru the brake light then.

Just run the wire up the rear pillar area and put the inside unit on the window.  I also have dark tint but dont have any problems.

Thanks for the info on the dark tint not affecting your system.

Now I know of 2 ways I can go and not have to drill any holes!

At this point I'm leaning towards the TRK-SR2 (a small unobtrusive pod) rather than the "thru the glass" system.  I am really looking forward to checking it all out.

Thanks guys!

How hard is it to hook up the RF modulator, does it hook to the back of the stock head unit?

That i dont know about, my HU is XM ready and has a connection to it.

I placed the reciever unit under my rear seat, pass side, up on the hump right against the back wall.  Fits perfectly.

I had the window mount on the side window of my ext cab. A low flying branch in a friends dreiveway broke the antenna right off. Now I have the roof mount and also ran it out the third brake kight. I seem to get better reception with the roof mount too.

Mine is also front-mounted due to a possible back rack installation.  Obviously, if I get the cab roof lamps, I'll be moving it off-center, similar to the way the General has its anntennae mounted.
