Who uses the voice to get directions using a GPS on the go?

I use the voice nav all the time... with my Garmin and my Windows phone via bluetooth.

I feel the use of the voice is a crutch and can cause more confusing in intense driving conditions. By having the GPS in your "line of view" you should be glancing at screen and not be studying it. I like peace and quiet, listening to the radio or talking to people without the bad mean voice breaking in. Once you get use to (w/o voice) it or "master" it, driving to different location is so much better. This is only my opinion but try it (easy routes/use it all the time) and you could see the difference. It might take some time but everything is on the screen and try to relax. If you miss your route, the GPS will always reconfigure pretty fast and there is always more than one way (you are never lost) to get there. I know people still make mistakes with using the voice.

I agree about not liking having the voice on by default. While my truck has factory navigation in it, I'm slowly sliding in the direction of plopping my Garming 3590LMT back up on the dash because it's simply a MUCH better solution.

 

No-touch voice activation (just speak a key phrase that I get to configure and it 'wakes up'), lifetime map updates, lifetime traffic info (HD Radio signal), large screen, touch-screen functionality if needed, storable addresses, and bluetooth connectivity if I have to toss it in a rental for work and there's no integrated bluetooth in that vehicle. Plus, it can read me incoming text messages on my phone and can import my contacts to use as destinations. It's an incredibly nice navigation device and it didn't break the bank to buy it.

There is no doubt you can buy a standalone gps that is better than the trucks and cost less with free updates and more know addresses. How sad is that they charge for updated maps? The same maps they would do anyways for the new vehicles, so it would really cost them nothing if they charged $10 for the drive and shipping. Hell if we coyld download it to our own drive it could be free. I often have to use my note 3 to find an address the truck can't and then have to use it or find an intersection it knows to trick it into taking me where I need to go. Good thing thing this option cost twice as much as my phone and has lower resolution on the larger screen. Sorry rant done
