I assume you're using Windows 98?

Generally this is caused because you didn't shut down properly.  Do you terminate Windows before you shut down the computer, or do you just hit the power switch?

What BlackSilver said about W98 also applies to ME and all op systems I ever used, including UNIX and MAC.

If this is the blue screen w/ the white or yellow bar indicating % scanned per hard drive, and w/ the message something like, "Windows was not shut down properly . . .", be sure you are doing the shutdown from the "start" button menu and not powering down until it's done, if it doesn't do it automatically.

Now, on the other hand, Win98SE and perhaps ME, I don't know had a bug where sometimes they wouldn't shutdown correctly, forcing you to power down, which would invariably generate the scan disk on startup.  That's a different problem and might require re-installing or upgrading to a new OP sys.

I'd say if you're not sure, take it to an authorized dealer.

Let the scandisk run through, it shouldn't take but a minute or so. Like mentioned above, make sure you shut down properly. If you still have the problem after shutting down correctly, you will have to re-install the OS.

If you sut down properly and it continues to run scandisk you may be heading for a hard disk failure.  Back up your data soon!!!  Happened to me more than once.

And consider Win2k or XP
