Time to rebuild/upgrade my GU6 differential

My 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.3L V6, 2WD, GU6 3.42 differential is making a horrible noise. My mechanic said I need a new/used low mileage differential.
I towed a car on a trailer and I am thinking it may have damaged the differential.

I was wondering If I could buy a rebuild kit and have my mechanic rebuild it, I searched online and found several different ones, and not sure which one fits.

My another thought was to replace it with an upgrade, if I can, what are my options?

Your mechanic is on the money.

Rebuild is gonna get spendy real fast. You are much better pulling a used one from a low mileage truck and swapping.

^^^agreed. You're looking at 8 hours labor plus parts to rebuild the old rear end. Being 2WD opens up options for ratios if you wanted to go higher/lower.

A 3.73 swap from 4 wheel parts runs about $700 with parts and labor. There is a price baseline for you.
