For a while, 788 actions were sought after for bench rest Guns because of their short lock time. Custom actions with fast locks became more available and the 788 fell back into obscurity.

That is what I have read. Most of the guys I know have never even heard of a 788. TN allowed .22 caliber center fire rifles to be used for deer hunting a few years ago. Dropped a doe at 200 yards like it was hit with a 30-06 using hornady varmit loads. Mags are very hard to find for it as well. Bought some chinese made ones a few years back but of course they are very low quality.
