Problem with transmission dipstick on 2007 Yukon XL

Recommended Posts

We recently purchased a 2007 Yukon XL with the 5.3 and 4WD. I changed the transmission filter and fluid yesterday, and I'm absolutely certain the filter it is the correct filter (I was initially given a filter what was almost the same, but I verified the one installed was indeed exactly the same as the one I pulled out). The dipstick hits something with about 1" left to be inserted - I can force it in, but the springiness of the dipstick just pushes it back out. I really don't want to drop the pan again, so I'm hoping someone can tell me what the problem is. If the truck was doing this before the transmission oil and filter change, I don't remember it doing so. I really appreciate the assistance.

I don't think you have a choice but bit the bullet and take the pan back off. I know you don't want to hear that but you are going to have to get a visual on the inside and see what is going on. Especially if something is wrong that will damage the transmission. Good Luck

Just a quick thought. I have seen where the dip stick tube would crack and break from vibration. That would be a quick check to look at. And see if maybe the dip stick might be hanging up at where the crack is.

OK, I took the transmission pan back off, and the corner where the dipstick goes into the reservoir is where there is a hump in the pan. The edge of the hump where it goes to the deeper part of the pan is very close to where the dipstick goes. If I tilt the pan slightly, the dipstick goes in all the way. However, when I put the bolts in, I cannot shift the pan enough to where the dipstick goes into the deeper part of the reservoir. It's not possible to even slightly bend the dipstick, as the bend will have to be perpendicular to the the flat end (meaning it would have to be bent on the skinny end), which I'm not willing to do. It's so close, that I'm not quite willing to to bolt the pan down all the way until I know for certain if the dip stick is supposed to hit the ridge or go all the way down.

Thanks for the replies, Duelin. If you have a truck similar to the 2007 Yukon, can you see if your dipstick goes all the way down? Thanks

After looking at how I can adjust the pan to get the dipstick to go all the way down with all bolts in and failing, I went to a neighbors house, and the owners have a 2013 Yukon. Their dipstick bottoms out (I presume it hits the ridge in the pan as well), so it springs back out around 1/2" if you don't clamp the end down.

The other thing is that their dip stick is completely flat. Ours has a 90 degree bend part way down. I'm not certain it looks crisp enough for a manufacturer bend. We're the 3rd owner, so I'm not sure if someone bent it along the way. I'd be curious what other transmission dip sticks look like.

Does your pan look like this?

There is a shelf built into some pans (upper left corner) where the dipstick comes in. It is designed to stop the stick from going to deep. If this is the case you may have the wrong dipstick

Neighbors Yukon is irrelevant. They have the 6 speed trans and you have the 4 speed. Look at filter numbers, and part numbers for dipstick related to your application and make sure those are all correct.

txab, I think you hit the nail on the head. Yes, that is exactly the same pan, except this has a ridge along the edge of the shelf. That makes it a little more obvious this ridge stops the dipstick. Thanks a million - I'll put it back together and see how things run.
