Me and my buddy decide to take our gf's to the movies last night and on our way home on I-65 we pass a dodge extended cab 1500.  My buddy has a 98 Z71 extended cab with a 350 vortec and he also has dual straight pipes on it.  Well we pass the dodge because he was goin way to slow for us.  A few minutes later he passes us goin bout 78.  Well he slows and we try to pass him and he punches it.  Well my buddy gets on it and we blow right pass him.  Ate his dodge alive.  No competition at all.  All i gotta say is those 350 vortecs have some B@lls.

Yep , A lot more balls than these 5.3s have

:wtf:

How do you figure? 98 Vortec 350 = 255 HP / 2001 5.3 = 285 HP

I cant see a vortec 350 killing a 5.3, BUT I have never drove a vortec 5.3............... My dad has a non vortec EFI TBI 350 and my 4.8 will absolutley kill it!

the 350's DO have more grunt, I've driven both, and even a 5.3 owner said he was suprised how my truck could get going, that was when it was stock. The 350 are made for down low, though, and higher up they can really fall off.

I never thought my vortec 350 with 105,000 miles on it would run away from a 2001 5.3 but I d**n near ran him over the other night coming home from work. We were in a line of cars running 45 in a 55. He pulled out to pass and I went with him. Well we both punched it and at 75 I had to back out and popped the gas twice to prove a point. Well we went thru some nice little curves at 70 and then came to a strait run of about a mile and a half. Well I decided to get a run on him, well he had the same idea as we both punched it coming out of the last curve. I pulled my baby out and as they say let the horses run and she was past and on her way out of sight by 90 mph. I pulled him by at least 15 truck lengths before I let off (knowing my stock single exhaust 350 has the computer shut her down at 100). Well he decided he had enough and stayed behind me for the next 20 miles which is where we stopped and he swared my truck couldn't be stock, as his had the fipk with 3 inch duel exhaust and the hyperchip. I raised the hood and all he saw was Vortec 5.7 and a k&n airfilter. I have to admit his truck looked good and sounded good. Just did not have the ass I thought it would. :D

I have both, and the 350 does seem to have a lot more balls. Although I know the 5.3 would probably outrun it.

I think that the 350 was underrated as well, I think mine listed at 185, or something like that. There is no way it's under 200.

I agree, my 96Z71 seemed quicker to me than than my wifes tahoe with the 5.3. They both had 285 bfgs, her tahoe had a 3.73 rear end and my Z had the 3.42 and it still seemed like it was much quicker.

I have all three and the 350 motor is a better pulling motor may not beat a 5.3 in a race but sure as hell will out lug it. 1991 EFI 350 will out pull the 5.3 silverado we have and so will the 96 Vortec 350. These are all very similiar trucks 1500's 4x4 3.73 rearend gears all except the 96 autos. The 5.3 will out run in the literal sense but definately won't out pull that why I had to turn my Z71 over to the foremen and buy my HD because I was killing it trying to pull what I asked of it. That's my opinion I could be wrong.

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
