DTC P0440 SES light

I have had SES light set twice now, the first time it cleared by itself, this time it stayed on.  It is a DTC P0440, which is a generic  EVAP diag failure.

 

Before I try to map out all the connections and find the bug, figured I would ask.. Could get lucky.

 

So far I just gave the gas cap seal a smear of white grease to help seal it.  

 

The Truck is a 2001 2wd ext cab, 4.3 V6.

if you already checked the gas cap, then theirs still the evap lines that run from the tank to the charcaol canister to check for small cracks, the charcoal canister itself to check, or maybe the evap purge control silionoid is malfunctioning.

do you fill your tank with the engine running, if so, that will trip that code, also.

Well.. the good news is the light has not come back, yet.  I have fill the tank to night, and the I'll see how it doe's as I draw it down again.   I guess next I'll have to roll around on the ground and check the connections if it comes back.  It looks like I may have to pull the purge valve and check to see if there is any carbon in it, and clean the vent tube.  

 

Time will tell...
