How Much Rust???

Hi,

 

I was wondering how much rust is TYPICAL on the undercarriage? I know this will vary by location but I'm curious to know how my truck to compares to others in a similar region. I live in Pennsylvania and have a 2012 Sierra 1500 with 32,000 miles. Below are some pictures of the rust. Is this normal for the age/mileage of my truck?? and should I be concerned? I just feel like it's excessive give the age. Thanks in advance!

Looks about normal for a PA truck. Between GM's crappy coating they use, and the garbage they put on the road in the winter here the under side of a vehicle doesn't look good for long.

Just wondering is this a US or a Mexican, VIN starting with "1" or "3", build? I live in the Rust Belt, my Avalanches were all Mexican builds and soon began to rapidly disintegrate with rust, my '12 exhibiting similar damage to your photos prior to trade over a year ago.

 

The Avy frames were coated with a waxy snot with no impact resistance against pebbles or road ash that would chip and peel off, and after salt exposure quickly rusted. I always attributed this to crap coatings, sheet metal and bar stock from local Mexican suppliers rather than coatings and steel from US/Canadian suppliers nearby to the Northern assembly plants. My '16 is a US Silverado and instead of a waxy coat of hardened snot it appears to be tar based petrochemical like the older traditional which hopefully will have better adhesion and resistance to impact damage........and the quality, i.e. percentage of carbon content in the steel, is less reactive to rust than the Avy frames.Time will tell.

 

I tried to minimize the damage by never storing a wet, salt soaked vehicle in the warm garage where the heat from the engine accelerated the corrosion from salt water.....at least the plastic coated brake lines in the later ones kept them from rusting out.
