SAFETY ALERT- Rear camera- READ ME
Thomcat replied to Dersch's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Doubt many owners on this 2019-2020 Silverado forum much give a crap about a monitor in a '15.....and I doubt anyone would give a crap about a true safety concern the vacuum operated windshield wipers in my '53 Bel-Air which would cut out whenever the vehicle accelerated......safety hazard no because it was the best available, most affordable and safest at the time........just like any resolution and brightness shortcomings in a '15 monitor. If you really don't need a backup camera simply unplug it and problem solved, or post on the K2 forum. -
SAFETY ALERT- Rear camera- READ ME
Thomcat replied to Dersch's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
So what? Is my '19 a safety hazard because I didn't opt for a more expensive Silverado with an electronic rearview mirror or overhead view in the monitor like my older '18 Traverse?....maybe I should write a letter to complain and give someone a good laugh. My '16 Z71 didn't have a HD screen and so I squinted or used mirrors or the "get out and guide me out hon" technique when available and then sprung for a '19 with a better video system which had not even been available in '16. And my 13 Avalanche didn't have a backup camera at all, nor the 30 or so other vehicles before that....were they safety hazards too? This whole concept of a too bright or washed out image screen being a safety hazard is absurd......no worse than turning the screen display off and using the mirrors or turning around and taking a look. If a driver can't safely reverse without having to rely on a monitor screen he shouldn't be driving in the first place. -
Turns out Shopchevyparts was a great place to order. $573 total including ground shipping and a 5% first customer discount. Ordered on the 27 and it came today, early morning so enough time for the install. Instructions are included, but visual install on a '19-20 is best in thiks video using another brand. Pricey but one of the very few bars using a custom brackets for the '19+ that permit you to reinstall and access the existing tow hooks. Only points to make is there is no way a battery ratchet removed the factory tow hook bolts.....I used a 3/8" air ratchet pressure pumped to 120 lbs and it couldn't break the bolts loose....needs a 1/2" breaker bar and 18mm socket. Real solid mount both the bar and tow hooks. And easier to remove the front plate to access the nuts on the mounting bolts and then reinstall the plate. Also added a piece of red plexiglass behind the hollow lettering. Now the sports bar, running boards and brush bar match. Install took almost three hours including a 1/2 hour rain break. Nice look with the lighted bowtie and brush guard.

SAFETY ALERT- Rear camera- READ ME

Good luck with your complaints. Here's how my '19 RST with the Convenience II package with HD Camera and HD monitors works at night with IOS radio upgraded to IOT/Nav. Nothing wrong with the safety on mine! At night or with the Sun sensor covered the +/- dash panel buttons will dim the dash and screen, including camera screens to almost total blackout.....this is especially useful with the Nav to reduce glare levels to suit driver preference.......dims in all gears except Reverse. And this is likely a safety feature that GM will never change because it is operating as designed......to override all dash controls and preference under Settings give full brightness when in Reverse so no complaints or excuses that drivers ran over something because the display was turned off under Settings or adjusted too dim. I live in an area with residential lighting but visit relatives in VA without residential lighting whose developments are pitch black at night. The stock HD camera/monitor setup with lighting using stock halogen bulbs in the Reverse lens and LEDs in the red lenses when backing up under both conditions is bright but with excellent resolution, much improved over my old K2 without the HD monitor/screen. Brighter LEDs in the Reverse lenses make likely the glare situation worse, not better. Only way to get dimming of the screen while backing up in Reverse is to previously dim the screen with the dash buttons, and while backing stop the vehicle place in Neutral to dim the screen to take a better look and then shift to Reverse to continue backing. -
Would you buy an electric Chevy today? What about an electric GMC?
Thomcat replied to Zane's topic in GMC HUMMER EV
Here's my .02.....didn't ask for it but you got it. We are energy independent with enough hydrocarbon energy to supply out great great grandchildren and their children.....air is clean....water is drinkable.....so what's the beef with replacing gasoline. Instead of pi$$ing away money on battery research they should use the bucks to reduce cost of their existing vehicles. May be they failed at Physics, but matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed....only transformed from one state to another state. And the juice need to charge the batteries or capacitors comes from power plants that burn a greater amount of energy in coal, oil or nat gas to produce a given amount of electricity. Oh yeah, forgot about solar and those huge Windmills made of alloys and resins that contaminate the environment not to mention the amount of lubricants necessary top keep them running and all the fuel and man hours necessary to service them. Now they discover that these avian Cuisinarts with fragile resin blades all need servicing because of the destructive nature of the winds otherwise they go out of balance when a blade breaks and collapse or turn into 200' high Roman candles when the motors seize or break loose and overspin the turbines during a hurricane. And they ignore the most clean and efficient.....Nuclear. Should take a lesson from the old New Englander's and go with flowing water energy and devoting their resources to projects similar to Niagara or the Hoover dam and go tidal, and not those stupid bouncing bouys either. Coastal areas do not have the advantage of fast flowing water, but the do have Moon energy in the form of rising and lowering tides with unlimited ability to trap water from the daily high tide, store in a holding lake and metering it out through electric turbines at low tide....unlike the wind or the Sun the Moon is 100% dependable, day or night, for moving enough water to make it feasible. So how come there's no interest......probably because the beachfront property is to valuable to those who have money or political control to proovide a cheap and relatively clean source of cheap energy to those who drive Chevys instead of those chauffeured in Mercedes 500s. Fantastic - lithium batteries.....much better than lead or zinc because they are much more reactive elements on the Periodic table and can provide much more energy in the same sized battery. And of course everyone WILL recycle these, not, recycling itself proses environmental hazards So what when lithium finds it's way into the environment...same element used in many psychoactive compounds to really mellow one out and produce a sedate society....or maybe that is the ultimate goal? Maybe some challenged teenaged Swede with a cool accent should provide a meaningful solution instead of being used as as a shill for environmental extremists.- 156 replies

GM Splash Guards installed "backwards"?
Thomcat replied to todd308's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
.02 Whatever you're happy with.......But.......Only another set on the rear? Each one is shaped that way for a reason.....they have to swap them and do it correctly fronts in front and rears in rear! The Silverados, and ditto the Sierras, come with a small flap on the forward rear wheel well which is designed to provide an aerodynamic flow around the wheel well and save a zillion dollars worth of gas......the larger rear flap in the front will interfere with the air flow......since fronts and rears are designed to work in tandem probably won't make a difference in gas mileage but may cause a noise/whistle/howl at certain speeds and/or the larger flap may trap excess mud/ice buildup in the front of the well. No charge? They already charged you for the job and they should do it correctly.....one look seeing same sized flaps with logos facing forward and rear on the same wheel well screams that it is a half a$$ed install. -
GM Splash Guards installed "backwards"?
Thomcat replied to todd308's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Been installing the OEMs for the past 7 vehicles and the bowtie logo always faces the rear of the vehicle where it is most visible.. -
Thanks again for the post.saved me at least $75.....just ordered from them and they offer an additional 5% for total order for new customers......ground shipping $39.00 + State tax came to $573.36 best from dealer was $715 and best from Chevy Truck Legends was $618 and I'd have to go to a praticpating dealer in PA to pick it up or I'd have to pay shipping charges.

A lot of the leaking posts mention urethane sealant on the window frame. Examination of the excess squeezed out on mine which remains leak free for over a year appears to be flexible black silicone rubber.

GM Splash Guards installed "backwards"?
Thomcat replied to todd308's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Larggr on the front work well only if you travel faster and for greater distances in Reverse than Drive. Take back and have the dealer install them properly. OEM guards on the Silverados are moron proof, forward mounted rear stone guards come stock so there is only one side to install the mud guards. Reminds me of the time a neighbor came back from a "tire specialty shop" with his 2 new snow tires mounted on the rear wheels of his FWD Toronado. -
Bigger gas tank for 1500 Crew cab
Thomcat replied to Rhino19's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
.02 Dream or complain all you want......GM is simply not going to modify their basic design for the 1500 to squeeze a larger tank in place of the DEF tank.......spent all their design money shrinking the tank to allow space for a DEF tank option. Extra 100+ lb of fuel would require new EPA, CAFE numbers and crash testing for a larger volume tank. A 24 gal tank, so what? At 16 mpg on a 24 gal tank gives a range of 380 miles, not good enough for today? At 60 mph that's 6 hours of constant driving and my bladder's full a long time before that gas tank is empty so time for a service stop anyway. And about that mileage the hood should be popped and a walk around safety check for leaks should be done anyway. And distance from a gas station is no excuse.......if you run out of gas it is your own fault. Distances of service from in Interstates: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/08/longest-distances-between-exits-on-US-freeways-415029/1?csp=34money&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+UsatodaycomMoney-TopStories+(Money+-+Top+#.XsqyEcApBPY Longest stretch in lower U.S. without gas: https://www.roadtripamerica.com/forum/showthread.php?46489-Longest-stretch-without-a-gas-station-in-the-lower-48-us My dad's pig '65 Chrysler 383 4bbl which was wider, longer and 200 lb heavier than a 5.3l 1500 got 6-7 mpg on a good day going downhill with a 32 gal tank for a range of 225 miles..... considered about average in those days.....about the same range as a '64 Nova I6 , a lighter, smaller car with a smaller gas tank........and I don't remember anyone complaining about the range, or the price of gasoline......occasionally might get a braggard boasting he was getting 10+ mpg. So what's the big problem today? Want more range, buy a Jerry can. https://www.amazon.com/VALPRO-Liter-Gallon-Jerry-Flexible/dp/B07541SV4Y/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=jerry+can&qid=1590343736&sr=8-9 -
Bigger gas tank for 1500 Crew cab
Thomcat replied to Rhino19's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
Wouldn't be able to sell a single one in the U.S. if owners expect vehicle to remain in compliance with emissions, C.A.F.E and crash standards....an excellent excuse to have your insurance company invalidate coverage for the mod. -
Won't get any sales on the T1s. Seems GM modified the later carpets and vents. Now the carpet is actually molded to hug the floor and fits at least 2" below the vent and extends at least 4" underneath so there's no way it can ever accidentally cover the vents. Ones in my split bench K2 were so crappy that they hurt my ears.....i.e. when PITA passengers complained of being either cold or hot when the front was set for ME.......on the T1 I went for the floor console just to get upper rear vents to hold down the complaints.
-
Unlike the previous K2s with CD slot , the '19s regardless IOR/IOS/IOT won't play videos *mpeg or show pictures *jpeg but will play audio *.mp3 files....nor will the USB or mini USB ports using a flash drive.....the SD port is on the USB hub and basically operates like another USB port.....probably the only reason why an SD card was chosen over a flash drive for the NAV was because it is basically hidden/out of the way and the card is physically locked in place during operation. On mine, with the SD Nav card removed or if you try to activate the Nav or if you try to operate when the vehicle is off and profile hasn't booted, it will default to OnStar and ask for a signup to OnStar for the feature and continue to screw it up until the vehicle is turned off and gone through the timeout delay.....and then with the SD card in at startup will go through the normal Profile/bootup and factory Nav restored with no ill effects.

2019 TRAIL BOSS PROBLEMS
Thomcat replied to BLUE TRAIL BOSS's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
May be mistaken, but I thought all '19+ T1s came stock with Start-Stop....so how come no Auto-Stop indicator on the face of the tach? -
I'm tired of checking for water leakage every time it rains......after 14 mos. if it doesn't leak, it ain't gonna leak. Fayuo E4 is for the glass and has nothing to do with the frame. Too bad not more pictures of the interior of the frame itself. And what's with this sealant? The number of casualties seem to be dropping off with time.......could it be that GM has already solved the problem but the solution too costly to retrolfit, let alone by half a$$ed attempts by inexperienced personnel at some dealerships? So all you get is the cheapest quick and dirty fix I examined my frame and window carefully to compare what I could see in photos of failures. The top frame of my rear window is .065 cm or almost 3/10 of an inch thick at the spots where it typically cracks. Pretty thick to spontaneously crack....could be there is a rev on the frame and not the glass. In addition the whole frame is secured with black silicone rubber, not the snot they used to seal my leaking Silao Avalanche. Sealed to the body so tight there is no way in he!! that the dealer can remove that frame without breaking it apart and not practical to use the OEM silicone for field repair replacement installing a new frame because of prep time on surfaces, inconsistencies in bead placement and cure times........that's a job best suited for a GM robot on a freshly painted and cured surface and not some quickie job with a layer of crap they lay on top of leaking sealant that has already been compromised.

Here's my .02 for what it is worth. Saw the greatly improved operation of the '19 Silverado LEDs over my previous '16s HID projectors. I wanted LEDs so that's why I paid the extra bucks for them stock on the upscale models of my Silverado and the and Traverse rather than jamming just any substitute in a lens housing not designed specifically for them. Seems I have one advantage, because intuitively I don't know $hit about what's best for substituting a particular LED source in a generic housing designed for a different design halogen bulb. . But, I do know enough not to take the word of any marketer with a vested interest in selling them deferring to someone who doesn't have a dog in the fight with the ability and equipment to conduct and unbiased objective test. The best video I've seen on the subject not only includes the theory but puts all then different brands and types of LEDs to measurable physical testing in multiple type automotive reflector housings. Worth a look at this video to answer all the above by an objective tester. Basically demonstrates that an intelligent choice is not based upon brand, specs or brightness, but strictly upon the LED's ability to duplicate the point source of the halogen filament designed for a reflector housing. Here are some takeaways: Fan or no fan doesn't mean crap. The newer COB (chip on board) LED designs run much cooler absent reduce the amount of heat generating support circuitry and generate much less heat. Brightness of the LED has nothing to do with the amount of light exiting the Lens and available on the road. A properly designed lower output LED will put more light on the road than a poorly designed higher output brighter LED. A poorly designed lower output LED will cause more oncoming driver blindness than a higher output brighter LED. The further the LED design in mimicking a point source the greater the chance of projecting a poorly focused beam. Regardless of price and brand, the closer the design is to a single output LED in the thinnest heat sink carrier properly located at the same distance focus point as the filament of the halogen bulb it replaces.....the greatest the compatibility with the reflector housing in placing the maximum amount of light on the road with the proper focus to prevent blinding drivers.

600 mile 2020 6.2 collapsed lifters
Thomcat replied to JPoland1228's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Not just the lifters which fail collapsed when oil. starved, so not too much damage, on the lifters, but whatever else the leaking oil gallery and localized pressure drop feeds for lubrication, i.e. bearings themselves, are compromised. Maybe nothing, but maybe something. Time will tell, that's why now is the time to dump Humpty Dumpty and pray the sales manager is smart enough to make a decent deal to cut losses. -
Thanks, for the photos. Those holes look like the source of many headliner leaks. That's why I'll live with an occasional expansion "pop" instead of getting the dealer to monkey around with those seals that are not leaking. Had those same thin crappy "O" seals around the bolts anchoring the spoiler on my Camaro. The way to go was to place a heavy blob of silicone rubber on the nut/washer and then tighten it....excess rubber just squeezed out and wiped off, but the holes are completely sealed from the inside-out.....and no more trunk leaks!

.02 I agree time for a new truck.....they only get two tries to glue together Humpty Dumpty properly ......not worth the time and effort to go through this twice again before you can start the hassle and spend time pursuing a lemon law claim......and even on chance they do get it presentable, you'll always have that half a$$ed engine repair on your mind every time you take a trip, or you hear a tap, whirr, stutter or bang. "Got to know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em" and decide which is more important your mental health or your wallet. Doubt they'll ever go for swapping for a new one, but they will go for a trade plus a pay the difference that you can work out. A twofer for them - they get to move the freight on a new car and when repaired on GM's dime they have a low mileage clean truck that their used car manager can hawk as a creampuff, returned because it was too big for the owner's wife to handle or some other "cocque and bull" story that will not show up as repaired engine damage on Carfax. Have to decide whether the extra bucks are worth your piece of mind throughout ownership. Yes, not fair, just consider the cost to be a tuition fee for another course at the School of Hard Knocks, where it took me 70 years to earn my PhD. -
Amazon was out of stock for my color in buckets for double cab so I ordered for the buckets, crew cab.......not only had all I needed, but extra and included the saddle bag ones for the console. Only difference was the small one for the middle of the rear door storage pocket which was easily cut from one of the extras.

Thomcat replied to JPoland1228's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
My .02 guess is good gasket, bad bolts..... or new bolts and tightening technique. Nothing wrong with the engines or components.....it's the technology and having proper replacement parts and trained and equipped personnel. These aluminum engines require special alloy head bolts which "stretch" when torqued to provide a spring action during expansion and contraction to properly seal oil pressure within the galleries for operation of the hydraulics, including the lifters. The tightening order, and a mandatory tightening sequence of torque plus additional angle is required.........original bolts must be thrown out and new ones installed each time a head is removed....try to kludge it and use the "stretched" ones and you are looking at an eventual leak -
Video capabilities went out with the CD slot. That's probably why no more overhead video screens, and now separate monitors built into headrests. Before upgrading to the Nav I put some music albums on a SD and they played just fine. Nav card does not contain pictures or videos in any of the standard formats.......only readable by the ('19) IOT radio or the IOS radio head after the BIOS has been upgraded by software installed by GM to provide Nav operating capability.

No available AM tube radios, cassettes or 8 tracks either.
-
I see that now, but the wider DRL/directionals have a clear lens instead the stock smoked ones on the RST you would expect those lenses to be smoked like the headlights.
