'05 Rust Severity

Hi all. I just picked up a 2005 Silverado 1500 LS 5.3 with 68k and it runs and drives great. Shifting, braking, engine, all smooth. I intend to keep the truck for a long time and drive it into the ground. The frame and undercarriage has a lot of rust on it however. Will anything critical to the operation of the truck be compromised by this rust? The car was in NJ it's whole life and by the looks of it I'm guessing it was used for plowing or sat near salt water. What should I look to replace?

Get under it with a wire brush and paint every thing steel with por15 paint.

Repeat every year.

The frames on these trucks will rust to the point of structural failure.

I agree with using the POR15. My Dad used it on the underside of his 07. It's good stuff.

It really don't look that bad for 10 years in Jersey. You can use phosphoric acid to convert the rust. It turns iron oxide (rust) into iron phosphate. A lot of the boating community uses it in combating rust from salt water. Scrape off the chunks and either paint it on, or you can spray it using a pump up sprayer or a spray bottle.
