Over full on oil change

On every truck ive ever had I just drain the oil, change the filter add the amount of oil stated and its always been good to go. My 2010 sierra I changed the oil on Saturday and just today I checked the oil. according to the dipstick its half to a quart over. Filter was changed also. Any ideas? its a 5.3. the filters I'm using are the ones suggested in the book at autozone or Walmart. they do seem very short.

Usually between the 'add oil' line and the 'full' line is one quart.

How many quarts are you past the full line?

the book calls for 6 with filter and that's what I used but its about 1/2 the distance of the add to full

Do you think you could have been on a slight hill when changing it to where not all of the oil drained out of the pan? Or maybe GM did like they did with these K2s and change the oil quantity after release so maybe your manual isn't an updated one and maybe you only need 5 1/2 quarts.

Just pour in 6 quarts and it's right. The owner's manual says the correct way to check the oil is when the oil is at operating temperature (temp gage at 210) and give the oil a couple of minutes to drain back into the pan. I check mine at the gas station a few miles away from where I live. The drive over warms the oil up, then I fill up with fuel, and check the oil. Comes out right on the full line that way. If I check it cold, it looks like it is at least 1/4 quart over full.
