Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls on 2015 Sierra WT

Hi everyone,

I'm getting ready to upgrade my I04 system on my WT to I05 with the 8" screen, and am wondering, is it possible to upgrade the steering wheel to one with audio controls? Has anyone tried? Does it need the BCM reflashed, or is it plug and play with the I05 system? From what I've read, the wheel should be compatible with the clockspring I have in there, so all I should need is the wheel.

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

It's been tried before and I don't believe that any one was totally successful. My guess would be it could be done if you're well connected at the dealership or with someone that fully understands how the various components talk to each other via the module. The parts are available but getting the control module to behave correctly might require some pull at the dealership. And don't forget to upgrade your Driver Information Center. The steering wheel controls, the DIC display and your new HMI are all interconnected. You might want to contact the folks at MVI. They are reasonably knowledgeable concerning GM electronics.

Thanks Renegade!

Well, I have the I05 module installed, installed an upgraded the radio module with XM, and an 8" screen, and am currently using an XM antenna from an XM vehicle install kit plugged into the radio module for the time for the satellite radio (believe it or not, it'll actually plug in albeit pretty snugly...). Everything works perfectly, the only irritation is having to use the aftermarket XM antenna.

I've been checking the postings where people have attempted to upgrade steering wheels, but I think they have retained the original I04 radio. Could it be that to work, you have to be upgraded an I05 or better HMI, and that after that the wheel is just plug and play?
