Plugs/Wires

Just out of curiousity, at what mileage do yall change your plugs? I figure you should go ahead and do the wires at the same time. My truck is fixing to roll 40k, and sometimes when it is cold it will hesitate when I hit the gas from a dead stop. :chevy:

I changed plugs and wires at 30K. I went with NGK TR-55 regular copper plugs and Taylor wires. Smoother idle with the coppers in there. Also noticed 2 platinum discs fell of my stock plugs. Didn't want that to happen again. Plugs are easy enough to change on this truck so I change them every 30K. Up to 95K now with no problems. IMO the only benefit of platinum is you don't have to change them very often.

I have'nt seen any new truck need plugs or wire's till at least 80,000, and thats just when the plugs start to show wear.

Only thing I would suggest is a fuel filter (if you have'nt already changed it) and a induction service(injector cleaning, throttle body cleaning, and a top engine cleaning)

Oh ya, and a trans flush every 30,000 if you want it to last!!!!! :D:thumbs:

I changed my plugs at 45K to copper plus. from now on, I'll change them every 30K and the wires every 60 or 90K probably; plugs showed minor wear, but nothing major at 45K.

I do my fuel filter evey 30K; it is located under the driver's side near the middle of the front and rear doors if I recall; not hard to change at all with the right size wrenches.

I'm at 50K on original transmission fluid and really need to do a change. Have never done this. Is it hard to do a flush myself? I'm a little worried about disconnecting the hose from the radiator and then running the engine to get the old fluid out. Is it sufficient to just drop the pan, change the filter and the 5-6 quarts of fluid every 30K miles?

What I have heard about just dropping the transmission pan, changing the filter, and re-filling it back up is that there is a significant amount of fluid that is acutally in the transmission and or/lines that does not come out when you drop the pan. That is why it is better to take it to a Pennzoil type oil change place and they can pump it out while the truck is running, thus replacing ALL the fluid. It cost me around $70 to get it done. I think it's worth it.

I just changed my plugs a couple weeks ago. I only had a little over 43,000 on mine. They plugs looked ok, but this way the first time they have been removed and I noticed they were all gapped inconsistenly, from .050 to .055. The manual and decal under the hood recommends .060 . I replaced them with Autolite Copper Core 605's gapped at .060 .

Here's a thread I started back then with some pics of the stock plugs. Plugs

I am running Champion Copper Plus plugs with MSD 8.5mm Superconductor wires. As mentioned before, the plugs will need to be replaced more often but it's pretty simple to change 'em on my '00 4.8L. I also believe that the engine seems smoother since the change to this plug & wire combination.

Where can I find the MSD 8.5mm Superconductor wires and how much did you all pay?

Also, what about the Taylor wires people are talking about. Where can I get them and how much?

They seem like the two most common aftermarket wires people are using.

On the trans service, has anyone found any place that will do the flush AND drop the pan for a filter change? If so, where (looking for a national company or something in central NC). If I can't find such a place, should I have them do the flush, then drop the pan and change the filter and add back 5-6 quarts myself after they do the flush? I just want it done right, especially now that I'm over 50K miles and haven't changed it yet.

Thansk!

dukbludvl,

I just went to the dealer and had them flush my tranny. The total cost for the pan and filter change and then flush was around $120 and I provided the fluid. One of the main reasons for the dealer doing it is to make sure that they didn't have a cow if I might have had a warranty problem down the road. This way I could tell them that they did the service on the tranny. For the cost I think that Valvoline quick change in Goldsboro NC charges $97 for the service to include a new filter.

From here on out I will just change the fluid when I do the filter. If you do it at regular 30k intervals then it keeps the fluid fresh and really no need to do a flush IMO. Since they have drain plugs on the pans now it makes it a breeze to do.

As for the wires. You can check out the Pref venders on here. That is always a good start. :D

Then if nobody here carries them I always check out Summit or Jeg's.

Hope that helps. Cheers!!!!

    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
