MountaineerTom Posted June 15, 2003 Posted June 15, 2003 I have the power, non-heated, mirrors on my truck. If I were to swap out the mirrors, and the new ones happen to be the heated kind, what do I need to do to get them to work? I know the wiring from the connector to the mirror itself will need to be added, but what about the rest of the wiring? My truck doesn't have a rear window defroster either. I think the heated mirrors run off of that, is that correct? Since I don't have the rear defrost, would I have to swap out the a/c and heat controls to the kind with the rear defrost button, or can it be wired up another way? I'm going to try and get some Tahoe mirrors with the light on the bottom off of eBay, but most seem to come with heated mirrors. I don't really care about the heated mirror part, but if I end up getting those, I might try to get them to work, if it's not to difficult or pricey.
GnatGoSplat Posted June 15, 2003 Posted June 15, 2003 Your truck should be prewired for them. Just add the climate control with rear defog button and they'll work. You might also need to add a relay underhood.
seadoons Posted June 16, 2003 Posted June 16, 2003 I would venture to assume that if you are going to get some mirrors off a tahoe, they are all going to have the light on the bottom if they are heated. I think the heated mirrors come on the LT option, and on the newer models they have the lights on the bottom too. I think it would be cool to have the lighted mirrors that illumitate when you unlock the doors.
Stepside Z Posted June 16, 2003 Posted June 16, 2003 Tom, My 01 Silvrerado had the rear defrost and yes the heated mirrors run off the same switch. I got the pins to fit in the plug from Jason P. I think the wires for the heated mirrors are the orange and black ones. I will check my pictures and send them too you.
MountaineerTom Posted June 16, 2003 Author Posted June 16, 2003 Cool, thanks for all the info. I got the pics John.

Sorry to bring up a nearly SIX year old post but, I had some questions about this idea as well. I have a 1999 GMT800, pictured in my signature and am planning to add the heated/signal option mirrors to it. Was thinking I would have to pull the wire harnesses out of whatever truck I found and transfer them over. Also putting in a rear view mirror with the compass/temp/auto dim. The outside mirrors would be power already like mine are. I've read that the wire harness is there already. One thing though about this is the dual climate control that is needed and relay up front. I don't have a dual climate control but, if I could add that, that would be pretty cool! Still need to know where the relay would be as well. Show any pics you have of the process if available. Thanks!

The truck was wrecked by one of the previous owners and I guess a heated one was installed. At least it has the symbol on the mirror showing it is heated.

The truck was wrecked by one of the previous owners and I guess a heated one was installed. At least it has the symbol on the mirror showing it is heated. I'll be visiting some wrecking yards and finding myself a set of heated mirrors and maybe wire harnesses. I installed the auto dimming/compass/temp mirror yesterday. The autotint I can't tell if it's working yet but, the compass works, after it self calibrated. The temp doesn't work though. The connector for the mirror was tucked up in the center console and only had 3 wires. I compared to my brother's truck which has it installed factory I discovered there was an extra connector in the box which is attatched to the firewall inside, near the brake pedal. Mine doesn't have that connector or the leads on the junction box for temp. Here is my new configuration and the wiring. Shows compass but temp isn't. Has an OC which I would guess means "Out of Calibration" Here is the harness on the backside of the mirror. Here is where the box houses connectors for the rest of the system harness. In the green box, you can see the lack of pins which means I won't have a temp option. Not sure if I could pull this system from another truck or if it would be worth it but, I'm not that conerned about temp. And here is my brother's factory configuration. Black w/white stripe, Cyan w/white stripe are the temp signal wires. Here is the connector setup I need. The one in the green box.
VMax2007 Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 . That's a lovely shade of nail polish you have on, what's it called?
hankfan89 Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Ok I'm new and doing the auto dim temp comp mirror mod. I have the plugs as shown in pics above . (Truck with temp) but no sensor under hood. I'm trying to figure out were to plug sensor into underhood.
