Bad Radio Reception - 96 Sierra

On my 96 sierra, I had a bad stock radio unit & cd player. I replaced that with a new pioneer HD radio capable unit.

 

In doing so, I was hoping that the radio reception would improve significantly but I was wrong.

 

It's slightly better that before the Pioneer upgrade, but its very sporadic.

 

One day I can pick up stations far away, other days I can't

 

I have no issue in my wife's Toyota Tacoma that has the same exact Pioneer HD Radio unit

 

I have checked the wiring harness on the unit, that all looks good, antenna is secure in the back of the Pioneer.

 

I even replaced the antenna on the truck, but I'm thinking it may be something with the actual antenna wire from the exterior to the back of my radio unit.

 

I do have odd issues when I plug in a charging device in the power outlets below the dash the radio will not work. Ex: Car charger for my iPhone/iPod.

 

Is there something not grounded correctly?

 

I'm scratching my head on this one.
