Pancho
Does anyone know of any long term harm done in using the tow/haul mode and downshifting into 3rd? I have gotten into the habit of using the tow/haul mode and sometimes shifting down to third when slowing down, especially when getting off the interstate. I guess I like the sound and rationalize that I am saving the brake pads.
BlackSilver
How heavy is the load you're towing? Unless you're loaded over 50% of capacity, you probably don't even need to be in tow/haul. You won't hurt anything by using tow/haul at lesser loads, but your gas mileage will suffer just a tad. As far as shifting down to third, that also probably won't hurt anything so long as you don't over-rev by dropping two whole gears in that Allison. Shaners
I agree, that manually downshifting your Auto tranny probably won't hurt it a bit. I have read before that it is sometimes recommended, like when going down a grade (of course your Ally tranny will do that for you if you just tap the brakes). Pancho
Is it true that you can't hurt the tranny when downshifting as the computer takes over and will not allow you to downshift more than what it is programmed for? I'm unloaded most of time and assume this thing built to handle it.
robsawatsky
The electonically controlled transmission won't let you change to a lower gear at unsafe (to the engine) road speeds. Don't try putting it into PARK though.
MemphisDoug
Just remember though, brake pads are always cheaper than transmissions!
Pancho
Good point. BTW - last time I checked the pads at 42,000 there appeared to be plenty there. At what point should I be expecting to replace them?
