95 silverado Won't shift out of park

The truck won't shift out of park unless the key is out or turn off.

It locks the shifter from moving when the key is in the run position.

I do not have to press the brakes to move the shifter from park with the key out of the ignition.

If I turn the key to the off position I can then shift it to neutral and start the truck then go to drive and reverse but once I put it in park it locks in place.

Could this be a bad brake switch? I just replaced it with less than 15 miles on the switch and everything was working.

It's something you disturbed in the shift interlock system.

Did you lower steering column?

Did you remove something from the brake pedal / steering column shift selector and failed to reinstall it???

Big clue you said, "replaced the brake switch". Very strong chance is this is a wrong part for "this" vehicle or you didn't hook up everything correctly. Compare old part to new part, ...are they the same in design???

Something in the ignition lock system is not working properly. It can either be repaired or bypassed. If you bypass it, make sure you are comfortable and confident in what you are doing. A steering column lock activating unexpectedly can be problematic if your on the freeway.

The truck has been setting for 3-4 year before I got it and it was stolen somewhere between that time. Anyway the front brakes were locked so I replace them and the rear calipers. The brake booster was also bad so it replaced it and the master cylinder. Got the brakes working and give the truck to my sister to test drive and noticed the brake light weren't working right so I replace the brake switch. She drove it home about 4 mile and the next day my niece drove it to school and back about 10 miles round trip. She was going to drive it to work and it would not shift out of park for her. I did remove the shift interlock solenoid and it only power up and works when the key is in the run position. Is the default position open or close for the solenoid? I took it apart and can see it engage when the key is in the run position only. I guess I should have tried stepping on the brake to see if the solenoid disengage but I didn't.

Okay I reinstalled the shift interlock solenoid and removed the brake light switch and manual push the switch in and it unlocked the shifter when the key is in the run position so I think everything is working. I may need to make sure the switch is mounted to the pedal correctly. But the shifter still can be shifted into gear without key in the ignition. Is the shift interlock solenoid supposed to have 12 volts 24/7 unless the brake is pressed. What keeps the shifter from shifting when the key is not in the ignition?
