2002 Silverado 1500HD 4x4 (4 door)

 

TLDR: need right size part.

 

Full story:

So, I bought what appeared to be a beautiful specimen of a 15 year old truck last month. I'll elaborate more in another post, but a big concern right now is the Driveshaft Center Support Bearing.

 

Many of you will know that the rubber mount/dampener material eventually deteriorates and then the bearing is surrounded by a disconnected rubber donut. I'm handy enough to pull the two part shaft, make some alignment markings, and take it to a trusted shop to get pressed out and the replacement pressed in. I'll probably replace the aging u-joints while I'm at it.

 

My problem is that I don't know what size replacement to buy. I tried Rock Auto, Amazon, AutoZone, and several other websites, but they all list multiple parts with different internal diameters. I originally wanted OEM replacements but even with my VIN I couldn't get it narrowed down to a singular part #. AC Delco website was less than helpful.

 

Anybody out there have the same issue? I almost posted in the 2500/3500HD forum because parts are probably the same, but wanted to respect the site's category system.

i would see if auto zone or the like has a set of calipers you can borrow to get the right diameter. I would think that would get you close enough to tell for sure

Accurate enough for checking parts, getting dimensions of parts.

I just used mine to measure the  o 'rings for my boats water pumps.

New pump $30. New o'rings, 8 pieces, shipped to my door, $7.68.

Without the calipers no way to tell the correct size o'ring.

You can get it on sale for $10.

I actually do have those very same digital calipers. I was just worried I might not be able to get to an exposed portion to accurately measure it before I take it to the shop to separate the pressed on bearing.

I'll rewatch some videos and see if enough is exposed to measure, and then get to work on it this weekend. So far I've "saved" around $2000 by doing the work myself.

Hydroboost: $45 rings kit instead of $300 for a new unit and $200 for the shop to install.

AC Delco revised/coated Hard Brake Lines: $90 instead of $1500 for a shop to do it.

Next up: u-joints, center support bearing, and oil/filter change.

I'm looking forward to actually getting this behemoth inspected and registered within the next two weeks.
