CarPlay & Bluetooth

I know that CarPlay can only be used when plugged into the USB port in my '16 Silverado. I also have my phone connecting to the truck via Bluetooth.  Should I not be doing both?  I noticed that when a mesage comes in get both the CarPlay and Bluetooth notification and when using Spotify sometimes it plays via the Bluetooth and other times via CarPlay?

My truck disconnects the Bluetooth phone when the car play phone gets connected. But I have a work phone that I use via car play and my personal phone I use via Bluetooth.

I would be interested in knowing the answer to this question. I'm having a lot of issues connecting to carplay in my brand new 2018 Silverado. BT will connect first and then when I connect thru usb it either doesn't connect or will flash carplay screen on phone and quickly disconnect everything (BT and Carplay). Very frustrating. Maybe its the cord?
